Police Arrest Suspect In Cat Killings
Source: JustNews.com

Police have arrested the man they say is responsible for a string of cat killings in South Florida.

Tyler Weiman, 18, lives in the area and is now in police custody, police said. He is charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty, four counts of burglary and 19 counts of improper disposing of an animal body.

"Our communities of Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay have been on edge for many weeks now because of the horrific and unspeakable slaughterings of many of their beloved feline pets. I sincerely hope that with his arrest, the residents will feel relieved and their cats will be safe once again. It is expected that the vicious crimes that have plagued these communities will not be repeated," said Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle.

"I commend the police officers of the Miami-Dade Police Department and senior trial counsel Michael Von Zamft who worked tirelessly and exhaustively with our law enforcement partners in order to put an end to these acts of cruelty. My heart goes out to the pet owners who have suffered such a great loss," Fernandez Rundle said.

3. If he's guilty, I hope he gets some help in addition to jail time.
Fact is, he's 18 years old and if convicted, he won't be in prison forever. One of these days, he'll be back out in the community, and I'd feel a hell of a lot better if he's had some psychiatric treatment before that happens.

A friend I've had for over 20 years is serving a five-year prison sentence right now; sadly, his circumstances are a direct result of a diagnosed but untreated mental illness, and he's getting neither treatment nor meds in prison.

25. The prison system in this country is MORE than a disaster, it is truly fucked up...................
..............ie: in 1963 I was 16 and was sent to a juvenile facility for the crime of "delinquent". I ran away from home (3 or 4 times) and took my car (that was in my fathers name) on a week long "adventure" before I was stopped in Nebraska. Now I DID not break any laws such as stealing or speeding, nada. Luckily I only spent 3 months in an Illinois facility. AT THAT TIME (1963) the white male kids were in the fucking minority, I know, surprise, surprise. Trust me, it has only gotten worse since then. This country is SO fucked up now that Jesus couldn't fix it. Happy Father's day!!:sarcasm:

Never been in jail since, but know people that have and still have a knowledge of the system. USA, the largest per capita prison population in the world, land of the free, I don't fucking think so. Here the poor and lower middle class go to jail, the more well off go to the country club for golf & drinks with their same dishonest friends.

53. Prison industrial complex, friend.
It's an economy unto itself, and anyone who thinks it exists to advance or protect society is delusional. In general, I feel the same way about the War on People (PC term: "War on Drugs"). The wealthy have their legal alcohol and prescription drugs; the unwashed have pot and "harder" street drugs. Biggest circle jerk on earth, and it's underwritten by all of us who pay taxes.

Ted Bundy wasn't the only one who got his start by torturing animals; George W. Bush also tortured animals in his youth.

Not only does this guy need a LOT of psychiatric help, he needs to never be allowed to even consider serving the public in any way, shape or form.

8. child sexual abuse is an epidemic in the US - which leads to this kind

of cruelty. also it can cause fire starters. and cutting on the body.

plus children that are sexually abused tend to pass it on as adults.

why more attention to this epidemic is not happening is beyond me.

17. Agreed. The sad part is that more of it is not nipped in the bud
so that those who have suffered it do not go on to making other creatures suffer as payback for what was done to them.

Some people are just sociopaths, though. They were just born without consciences and they will never get any. It's not their fault, technically, that they were made that way, but the only way the general population is safe from them is if they're taken out of it forever. Because as long as they're out among people, they will always see themselves as the only creatures of value and everyone and everything else as either tools they can use to get what they want or impediments to be eliminated on the way to it.

The problem is that those who do sexually abuse children don't stop at one child or ten children. They keep going until they get caught and put away forever.

87. well ...
Don't know what island you are on, am guessing tropical or semitropical, and it is always fraught with hazard to try to ID a bug from just a picture - BUT, the creature pictured next to the quarter is most likely a "common centipede" or "house centipede"

If so, it is a beneficial insectivore and has a bite that is no worse than a bee sting (unless one is allergic to bee stings, or - less commonly - to centipede bites). Even when handled they are unlikely to bite (ie, they are much less aggressive than bees).

Mostly they eat cockroaches, ants, flies (? how do they catch them), grubs, worms and slugs. Even the eight inch long Giant Texas Centipede is your friend (biologically speaking), though it is more likely to bite than the house centipede.

Even so, you do catch your breath when one come out from under the dishwasher.

Some tropical centipedes are dangerous, but very likely NOT the one you have pictured.

Most bugs are NOT dangerous.

Do a YouTube search for "centipede" + "bat", and you'll see a few videos showing you what I mean. Albeit with larger prey than flies, but it's probably the same tactic.

39. Mental Hospital
I don't think the kid should get any kind of stiff jail sentence for killing the cats. Instead, I think he should be committed to a mental hospital for treatment. That path would be a whole lot better for him and society in general. THe kid has a pychological problem. If that problem is not treated, he will probably end up killing people when he gets out of jail.

I feel bad for the kid. I feel bad for anyone who suffers from a mental illness.

41. I'd been watching this story and expected the culprit to be
some young, dumb, full of piss and vinegar type. Since I was a kid I've only killed one animal, that poor little squirrel wasn't more than an irritation and a target. Unfortunately, I hit the target on the first try. The next time I took aim at another living thing was decades later when a stray cat posed a serious threat to my cats. I took out the popgun and shot at the lowest power that might be accurate. I smacked him in the hindquarters and I thought I hurt him more than intended. I probably did but he got the message he's not welcome here. I'm glad to see him grazing the fields as long as he leaves my babies alone.

I think the big problem is that so many don't have an understanding of the effects of our actions. Killing another living thing might not seem like a big thing unless you consider someone might have an emotional connection to that beast. Even if it's not a domesticated animal, why take a life if it isn't to support your own life?

I'm glad to say I would never kill unless for food or defense.

Just a point of curiosity, Why should a cat killer get more bandwidth than the deaths of homeless, veterans, and mentally ill or just plain broke?

I think the best you can possibly hope for is to make them afraid to ever end up in jail again. I hope his cellmate, Bubba, loves little kittens. :(

He will kill again. The cats were just practice for larger prey. Mark my words, this guy is a serial killer in infancy.

48. "Police have arrested the man they say is responsible..." Dangerous words in 2009! Should have read
"Police have arrested the man they allege is responsible..."

Lawyers can make hay with wording. Very irresponsible of the paper if they turned the words of the police around, and very irresponsible of the police if they misspoke.

If police didn't think he was responsible, why would he be arrested and charged?
Police don't think he is responsible but arrested him just for the fun of it or what?

61. Authorities: Teen arrested in Fla. cat mutilations
Edited on Sun Jun-14-09 02:12 PM by Thickasabrick
Source: Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) — A teenager was arrested early Sunday and accused of committing a string of gruesome cat mutilation deaths that had horrified residents of his Miami area community, authorities said.

For the past month, shocked pet owners in the Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay neighborhoods have reported finding more than two dozen cats killed and mutilated. Some of the dead cats were missing fur and appeared to have been cut with a sharp, straight instrument, police said.

Tyler Weinman, 18, was taken into custody early Sunday at a party, police said. Weinman was charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty, 19 counts of improperly disposing of an animal body and four counts of burglary.

"This terrible time has drawn us together as a community, further emphasizing the importance of knowing our neighbors, communicating with each other, and always staying vigilant to suspicious activities whenever or wherever they may occur in our village," said Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn.

I'm glad they caught the little "serial-killer" in the making.... Sadly, no matter what sentence he gets, he will be out soon, without treatment, and likely retain his sociopathic tendencies.

65. Animal mutilation
Animal mutilation is a *huge* deal. It is the precursor for all kinds of self-mutilation as well as brutality and violence against others.

If the kid were still a minor, he'd get the help he needs. This sort of thing is on the radar in the public schools. Sadly, as a legal adult he'll probably end up avoiding help if he wants to. Hopefully his parents will get involved in his treatment.

I hope he acted alone.

70. There was a kid around my daughters age who used to harm frogs...
and other animals. I did not know about this or I would have gone ballistic- apparently my daughter did rip into him when she found out without my knowledge. Not too many years later, he ended up murdering a friend just because he wanted to know what it felt like to bash someone's head in. Nobody who knew this child was shocked at the news story years later, but it is tragic that an innocent young man had to die because the family of the murderer seemed to do everything to ensure this child grew up to become a fucked up adult. You really have to watch kids who enjoy harming animals. That is an ominous sign that something is truly unbalanced with their chemistry.

Mary Lou Shad said she does not know the Weinman family, but her husband's boss does. She told ABCNews.com that Weinman's parents are divorced, and the teen splits his time between his mother's house in Cutler Bay and his father's house in Palmetto Bay, Fla. Dead cats were found in both towns

77. Look at the look on his face
He looks like a sociopath. He's proud of himself. It gives me the heebie-jeebies.

No matter what comes of this, even jail time, this kid needs treatment for whatever the hell is wrong with him. If he doesn't get it, he could, like many serial killers escalate to killing people. And even if he didn't escalate to humans, it's unlikely he'd stop killing animals. Who knows? He might even get a job at Carolina Biological, the business that supplies fetal pigs and frogs and animals in jars to universities, a place where cruelty is rewarded. I remember when PETA infiltrated them and filmed the most horrendous stuff, like people torturing animals to death. Our society is so sick.

And HERE is a really weird one from:

"tyler weiman cat killer > Click here to view ALL "tyler weiman cat killer" products"

Realize that the above page is generated by a script trying to put together an 'acution page' - but truly, I would not be surprised if there are not sleazeballs who at this very moment are working on Tyler Weiman Cat Killer T-shirts.

Weiman apparently had a facebook page (which I cannot seem to locate: More purging of the WWW?)

89. We will find out, when the kid's lawyers run out of delaying tactics
At the moment he is simply the alleged cat killer.

Hopefully he will soon be the convicted cat killer, and one can hope that the trial goes better than that of another alleged cat killer, where one juror held out for five days in the trial of an ex-baseball player resulting in a hung jury (http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/story?id=5894865&page=1)
