Supreme leader urges Iranians to support president as clashes erupt

Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Violence has erupted in Iran after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (ah-muh-DEE'-neh-zhahd) was declared the winner of yesterday's election.

Supporters of Ahmadinejad's main challenger have set fire to tires outside the Interior Ministry in Tehran. Police fought back with clubs.

It's the most serious disturbance in the capital since student-led protests in 1999.

Backers of reformist Mir Hossein Mousavi (meer hoh-SAYN' moo-SAH'-vee) are refusing to accept Iran's declaration that the hard-line president was re-elected in a landslide.

Mousavi charges that the election was rigged and is calling on his supporters to resist a government of "lies and dictatorship."

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (hah-meh-neh-EE'), is closiong the door on any chance he could use his powers to intervene. In a message on state TV, he urged the nation to unite behind Ahmadinejad, calling the result a "divine assessment."

20. Kind of like Pat Robertson
giving his blessing to Dubya Bush right after the 2000 election.

Its God's will (that we cheated, bribed, rigged, fear-mongered and stole our way into power)

23. Never trust someone who calls himself "Supreme Leader"
I've seen enough sci fi movies to know that.

4. They had to make it a landslide because they even feared a runoff.
So, this, 62 to 31, 30-point blowout BS was perpetrated.

7. WAY worse then that. Bush stole it by a couple hundred, this was millions of votes
Its a total and complete sham. No outside groups to monitor, no texting and communication allowed, the Supreme Leader can control whatever he wants to.

14. Yes, just like we all know for sure that Bush really won Florida
Election fraud never happens, after all; especially not when an autocratic regime keeps ALL observers out, and when the results are sharply distinct from initial predictions.

More :sarcasm:

22. Well, I would tell you no one gives a rats ass what YOU Think.
But since it's clear you CAN'T THINK AT ALL, that would be an inaccurate statement.

9. The mullahs should really think twice.....
The mullahs rode into power in Iran only because the people turned to Khomeni and the religious establishment as a means to oust the Shah. I seriously don't believe most Iranians at the time as a practical matter cared what method was used to out the dictator.

Now 30 years later, nearly 30% of Iran's population has been born since the "Revolution". I don't think they are as beholden to the clerics. If the clerics aren't careful they could face a second revolution in which the clerics are relegated to their rightful place, the Mosque with political power safely housed in a more secular authority. I'm not suggesting we would see Iran adopt a Turkish-style secular state but this could come back to haunt the mullahs.

Only when the Iranian people are tired of being controlled by religious nuts will things change for them.

18. I did have this funny feeling that Mousavi was probably receiving a "pension" or something from CIA.
Maybe an "allowance" for being a good boy?
