The Providence Journal reported late Thursday that RI Congressman Patrick Kennedy has checked himself into an undisclosed medical facility for treatment. Kennedy, who has a past of addictions to alcohol and prescription drugs, has since become a voice for advocacy when it comes to beating addiction. Kennedy checked into a rehab facility several years ago after a car crash in Washington, DC. Charges were dropped in that incident, and Kennedy was ordered to pay a fine, was put on probation for a year, and entered a drug treatment program.

People close to Kennedy, the Journal reports, say that the congressman will be at this facility for more than a few days, and has stepped away for this undisclosed treatment. Stay tuned to ABC 6 News for the latest on this developing story.

A statement released by Kennedy through his office, as reported by the Providence Journal:

“I have always said that recovery is a life-long process and that I will do whatever it takes to preserve my health. In consultation with my doctor, I have decided to temporarily step away from my normal routine to ensure that I am being as vigilant as possible in my recovery. I hope that in some small way my decision to be proactive and public in my efforts to remain healthy can help remove the stigma that has served as a barrier for many Americans reluctant to get the help they need.”
