(Jacksonville, FL) School Board Considers Ban on Pics, Video on Campus
Source: WOKV

The Duval County School board will consider banning students from taking pictures and videos while on campus.

The proposed change in the student code of conduct comes after a video allegedly showing a teacher choking a student was turned in to administrators.

The school district says teacher Michael Brown has been removed from the classroom at Forrest High, but it's still investigating the charge.

If the district approves the change tonight, students will not be able to take those videos or photographs without the permission from school administrators and the people in the photos.

2. Interesting solution
The best way to prevent incidents where teachers are shown assaulting students is to ban the equipment used to record the offense?

10. so, their only interest is in protecting teachers from any evidence being available
to prove misconduct?? i don't think that is cool. it's obvious that students need to be able to take pics and video in the event of any kind of misconduct. otherwise it's their word against the teacher!!

15. So, now there can be lawsuits against the school board for this stupid rule.
And if a video is made of a teacher choking a student, they school can try suspending the student -- that should be really great PR. ;-)

16. i think that in light of the student being choked by the teacher, the
parents may not go along with this idea. They are going to want their kids to record any bad behavior. and that should go for teachers AND students... if a student is acting up then the behavior should be able to be recorded as well.

12. The school board of a neighboring county banned cameras and cell phones with cameras last year.
Edited on Mon Jun-08-09 02:37 PM by 1monster
The rational was that students could use the cameras to cheat on exams. (My thoughts on as a school employee are :eyes:.)

The penalty for use of a camera in school is up to two days suspension.

Most teachers ignore the School Board's ruling on cell and cameras. The most they do is confiscate the camera or cell phone until the end of the day. The more likely scenario is that the student will be told to turn it off and put it away.

If a dean catches a student, however, the student can be sure the item will be confiscated at least for the day, depending on the individual and the school.

edit: I'm always dropping an "s" somewhere.

14. Been banned in my kids public school for almost a decade
The ban is on the use of cell phones in general (thanks to Republican governor who created special drug free zones around schools that banned use of electronic communication devices in schools) but expanded to camera phones and concealable cameras because there was concern they would be used for covert photos of fellow students in locker rooms or other compromising positions. All cell phones have to stay in lockers or vehicles.

17. i can understand the concern over photos of people in locker rooms and the like.
but these rules leave parents in awkward situations when they want their kid to have a phone with them for say after school if they need to call their parents or something. My nephew has a phone as he walks home from school. It seems all the kids have them now, my nephew is 11... my daughter is 10 and wants one. i can see no justification for her to have one, frankly. though i know all the other kids have them, as she tells me so often. I think she's too young. IF she was a walker, like my nephew, or had extracurricular activities besides girl scouts which i drop her off and pick her up and the leader has a cell phone.
