Obama's Commitment To Constitution A Welcome Break From Past (5/21/2009)

New Indefinite Detention Proposal Nevertheless Troubling

NEW YORK – The following can be attributed to Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, in response to President Obama's national security speech today:

"We welcome President Obama's stated commitment to the Constitution, the rule of law and the unequivocal rejection of torture. 1. Not LBN, it's more than 24 hours old

And the ACLU had less than kind words for Obama today regarding his proposal to lock away suspected evil-doers preemptively.

2. Except when it comes to....
warrantless wiretapping, the "war on drugs", and his obligations as chief law enforcement officer (no prosecutions or even investigation of crimes against humanity and the capital crime of torture, no prosecution of the gangsters on Wall Street). I have been very disappointed with his concept of "bipartisanship" - let everyone get away with their crimes. We have already seen the results of this attitude - lack of accountability for Watergate and Iran-contra have led us where we are today.
