Obama (Officially) Announces First Nationwide Regulation of Greenhouse Gases

(Washington Post) President Obama today proposed tough standards for tailpipe emissions from new automobiles, establishing the first nationwide regulation for greenhouse gases.

The proposal also raises fuel efficiency targets to 35.5 miles per gallon for new passenger vehicles and light trucks by 2016, four years earlier than required under the 2007 energy bill.

The president praised automakers, unions and political leaders for forging what he called a "historic agreement to help America break its dependence on imported oil."

Note: 35.5mpg is the average for the fleet (autos, SUVs, other light trucks). Speculation is that passenger cars will have best 43mpg to get the feet average down.

7 years is a bit long in my view, but significant retooling will be necessary.

"Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Calif.), Deval Patrick (D-Mass.) and Jennifer M. Granholm (D-Mich.) were among a variety of state and industry officials attending the announcement today"

2. 42 mpg autos, 26mpg light trucks is an estimate of how you get 35.5mpg
for the fleet, based on today's splits. 35.5mpg overall is what is mandated.

Too little too late. Sorry Mother Earth, it was good while it lasted. Humans are too stupid not to go extinct.
