Obama greeted by cheers, protests at Notre Dame
Source: AP

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – President Barack Obama, wearing the blue gown of the University of Notre Dame, joined commencement ceremonies Sunday at the nation's leading Catholic university amid protests over his support of abortion rights and stem-cell research.

Obama received a lengthy ovation from students and spectators when he walked onto the stage to deliver a speech expected to touch on the debate that has roiled the campus for weeks. In recent days, protests over his appearance and the honorary degree to be conferred on him built to the point that police arrested 19 demonstrators Saturday and at least another five on Sunday.

Those arrested Sunday included Norma McCorvey, the plaintiff identified as "Roe" in the Roe v. Wade case that led to the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. She has since opposed abortion and was part of a 200-person protest at the university's gate.

"Shame on Notre Dame," read one sign at the university's gate. Another declared "Stop Abortion Now."

6. I know - I am not fond of them, either. The world is not black and white! Issues tend to be grey!

11. I tried to talk about common ground like Obama

on the Catholic Answers board. I got chewed out by pretty much everyone there and it helped get me banned from the board. It was about a year ago.

3. Ever wonder why Fred Phelps' band of haters eschew abortion
issue? I'd say the Randall Terry and other radical anti-abortion crowd is inherently lucky that loony Fred has not embraced their cause, but limits his intense hate focus to the issue of homosexuality. (not that the Terry factions are not nuts enough on their own...)

5. Over 200 people from all over the country? Not exactly the million man march, is it? I heard that
50% of Catholics polled by PEW (which, IMO, is quite right leaning) approve and only something 25% of Catholics polled disapproved.

The harder the wedge issue jockeys ride their one trick ponies, the worse they look to unaffiliated voters, IMO. This is especially true this early in a Presidency, and especially when their guy left the place in such an uter, mind boggling mess.

Come on, Gingrich, Jindal, Cantor and all you other Presidential hopefuls. Go for it. Bash away. Don't let up for a second. You'll impress everyone with your virtues and those of your Party. You can trust on that. No, really, you can.!!11!11!!!

8. The tea party people are not the pro-life activists
We'd be smarter to investigate their demographics better than to rely on assumptions.
