Official: More than 1M child prostitutes in India
Source: CNN

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Around 1.2 million children are believed to be involved in prostitution in India, the country's federal police said Monday.

Ashwani Kumar, who heads the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), told a seminar on human trafficking, that India occupied a "unique position" as what he called a source, transit nation and destination of this trade.

India's home secretary Madhukar Gupta remarked that at least 100 million people were involved in human trafficking in India.

"The number of trafficked persons is difficult to determine due to the secrecy and clandestine nature of the crime.

1. I'll never understand how a grown man can want a child for sex.
That's just so wrong on so many levels.

11. Me either.
I could grasp stealing, lying, fighting hell even murder. I can wrap my mind around them. But harming a child in any way? For sex? It makes me ill. It's hard for me to even consider pedos human.

3. Very good HBO documentary that touches on this subject:

Born into Brothels

"In Calcutta's red-light district lives a group of unforgettable children. Feisty, resilient and wickedly funny, they are the daughters and sons of prostitutes. Trying to evade a doomed future, the children embark on a transformational journey that teaches them how the transcendent power of art can offer hope - and help redirect these challenged lives."

I just watched this movie about a week ago. Sad. It's available in the 'free movies' section of Comcast On Demand.

5. Not to burst anyone's bubble
But 1.2 million child prostitutes in India's youth population of 362 million puts the percentage at .3%

Now in America, it's said there are about 1 million prostitutes, and 66 percent of those are under the age of 18. So with a youth population of 82 million in the U.S., that means the percentage that are prostitutes is .8%

Nearly three times the ratio that India has? Pretty impressive...how about reporting on that, CNN?

6. sorta agree
if that's true; then yes; this is sensationalistic reporting from CNN...not that they should not report it; but maybe they ought to put it on perspective.

apart from that; this news is really saddening and i wish something could be done to save those kids from this fate :(

7. You certainly have a point but
2/3 of American prostitutes are under 18? I don't buy that.

9. I pulled the numbers from various sources
But this one lists the number as between 300,000 and 800,000 in the U.S., so my estimate falls around the median.

8. However, I think the % of children that are prostitutes in India are
of a much younger age than here in the U.S. I bet a lot of the children involved in prostitution in India have not reached puberty yet.

10. I won't quibble over US child prostitution stats vs. India's. Just glad there's a spotlight.
I'm guessing Slumdog Millionaire is helping to spotlight some of the child trafficking issues in India. Frankly, who cares "whose worst"? It's all bad and I'll K and R any post that brings it to light.

This must stop. I know that's a wildly crazy idea but children MUST grow up without fear of sexual exploitation in order to be "whole" grown-up human beings.

Alas.

17. Meh, when you have nothing of worth except your body..
That's what you do to survive..

Interesting that India is a very religious country.

I think it would be most illuminating to chart the religiosity of nations versus the number of child prostitutes in those countries. I think the results might very well tell a sordid tale.
