US confirms downing Iranian drone over Iraq

BAGHDAD, March 16 (Reuters) - A U.S. military spokesman confirmed on Monday that U.S. forces shot down an unmanned Iranian aircraft in Iraqi airspace last month.

"Coalition multi-role jet fighters shot down an unmanned Iranian (aircraft) on Feb. 25, approximately 60 miles (100 km) northeast of Baghdad ... the UAV had been tracked by coalition air forces for nearly 1 hour and 10 minutes before it was engaged and shot down well inside Iraqi airspace," the spokesman said. 2. Drones are double edged swords

On one hand people don't die if they are shot down and they have better capabilities to stay aloft longer with less ability to be tracked.

On the other hand, because no one can die, governments use them to do things they never try if a pilot were aboard.

I want to take one apart and see how it was built, the technology used in it's construction, what electronics it contains, what coatings it uses, the frequency of the transmitter, etc.

4. Scepticism should cut both ways.

Many here assume when the Iranians say in their state run media that they shot one of ours down, they must have. Evidence? Nah. None needed. Iranians would never lie.

Others, as well as more than a few of the previous "many", make the opposite assumption when the US says that we shot down one of theirs. Even when "evidence" is forthcoming, unless it fits our preconceptions about what the evidence has to be we assume it's fabricated. It must be the case that Americans never tell the truth.

I always find such asymmetries fascinating. We tend to extend good will to those in our honor group or those we feel solidarity with, and usually reserve ill will for outsiders.
