He was a great disappointment before then: continuing the Thatcherite monetarist, anti-industry, pro-banking economic policies that have got us into the present mess, and setting up a super-managerial state (think of NCLB applied not just to education but to everything).

He was better than Thatcher - but not much better.

Incidentally Lord Levy is the father of Daniel Levy, a prominent Israeli peace-camper; so perhaps he gets to hear a little bit of sense about the Middle East from that source. Certainly he won't hear much sense about anything from Blair.

11. Blair may well be completely sincere in his belief that he can help.

He does seem to have an amazing ability for self-delusion.

But the truth is, that the only country that can really do anything for peace in the ME is the United States. It
is the U.S. that supplies the money and the weapons to Israel, and only they have the power to order Israel out of
the territories, a move that would go further than anything else in forcing Hamas to lay down its own arms.

For Israel, continued support in return for complying with United Nations resolutions; for Hamas, money for
reconstruction on the condition of accepting Israel's right to exist and desisting from rocket fire and suicide
bombing.

If Obama is strong enough to seize the moment, it is he who can make it all happen.
