Stimulus Money May Re-Open Chicago Windows Factory

CHICAGO (AP) ―

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden says a Chicago factory where workers staged a sit-in is an early beneficiary of stimulus legislation.

Biden singles it out in a joint statement with Senator Dick Durbin.

About 200 laid-off workers briefly occupied the Republic Windows & Doors factory in December after Republic gave them just days notice before shutting down.

A green-oriented windows maker, California-based Serious Materials, announced Thursday it's bought Republic's assets and hopes to reopen the plant with the same workers.

Durbin notes there are billions in stimulus funds for weatherization programs that should create demand for Serious Materials products.

3. That is certainly good news.
However, if there is little or no demand for new windows (new
homes) it won't do much good. The government can not overturn
the laws of supply and demand.

4. Ever heard of energy efficiency in existing homes?
The government could very easily increase demand by allowing tax incentives for "green energy upgrades" in existing buildings. Over the long run, the economy would thus save lots of money due to increased efficiency and lower heating bills. Might piss off the hydrocarbon industry though.

Additionally, you forget that government engages in construction activity too--new schools and hospitals being built would also tend to increase the demand for windows...

8. Uh,...
the government already does this. Check out the DOE website for what they allow. I'm claiming my new windows and attic insulation this year.

6. windows aren't just made for new homes
People with older homes also replace old windows in old houses. And with new technologies coming along to retrofit older homes, this company could have a bright future.

5.  I'm a contractor
and Construction is in the crapper, to say the least.

Where is my stimulus? Where do I apply for (borrowed) taxpayer funds?
