Breaking: CIA destroyed 92 interrogation tapes
Source: Raw Story

New documents show the CIA destroyed nearly 100 tapes of terror interrogations.

The figure is far higher than the handful of recordings the agency has previously admitted destroying, and the revelation comes as a criminal prosecutor is wrapping up his investigation in the matter.

4. CIA destroyed nearly 100 interrogation tapes, far more than previously known
http://www.newsday.com/news/politics/wire/sns-ap-cia-interrogations,0,2379355.story

New documents show the CIA destroyed nearly 100 tapes of terror interrogations.

The figure is far higher than the handful of recordings the agency has previously admitted destroying, and the revelation comes as a criminal prosecutor is wrapping up his investigation in the matter.

The acknowledgment of dozens of destroyed tapes came in a letter filed by government lawyers in New York, where the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit seeking more details of terror interrogation programs.

The tapes became a contentious issue in the trial of Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, after prosecutors initially claimed no such recordings existed, then acknowledged two videotapes and one audiotape had been made.

I knew that was a low number. When I was in the Army I learned over time that when the government tells you things are great, they're not "that" great. And when they tell you things are bad - they're worse!!

they've buried. No question. Two reasons to say "100": first, that sets the goal for what is searched for, if anyone ever gets the gumption to go looking for evidence surrounding the destroyed material. Second, if the real, much higher number became known, that discovery would be a great scandal all on its own.

22. Makes me wonder
where my recent application to the CIA went. I told them in my application that I would be the kind of agent that would do things by the book and would not torture and wanted to make America a better place with a better image abroad. I guess I was too good for them to get a call back. Should I hold on to my hopes of getting a call back?

I am wondering why the people in the Bush administration are still wandering the streets and I also wonder if in 3 years will they still be wanderign the streets? Am I to have no hope that this country can hold people accountable for any crime other than fellatio? I mean wth!?

31. Yet another reason to be proud to be a card carrying member of the ACLU.
From the Raw Story article:

The CIA acknowledged that it had destroyed dozens of tapes of interrogations with terrorism suspects in a letter filed by government lawyers in New York, where the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit seeking more details of terror interrogation programs.

The ACLU has responded to the news that 92 videotapes were destroyed with calls of a "prompt finding of contempt."

from government employment for the rest of their lives.

Every person who ordered them destroyed should go to prison, and then be barred from government employment for the rest of their lives.

If there are no consequences, the consequence will be that it will happen again, and again, and again.

of the tapes so he can cover his own ass, Like in the movie, "Enemy of the State" starring Will Smith

Furthermore, since when does the CIA use "Tapes" anymore. This is so ludicrous that I have to laugh at the stupidity of the American media/Public.

This toxic wastes is all digital, stored in mainframes and database servers and backup farms at Fort Meade. Anyone who thinks that it's a singular "Tape" is delusional.

47. KSM was waterboarded almost a hundred times over a two week period
Most of the destroyed tapes were two or three key prisoners who had been involved in planning 9/11 and who had connections with the Agency operations.

No doubt, that did nothing to help their ability to recall key details.

58. The Bottom line is.......
Even without the tapes, there is a ton of witnesses and documents both military and detainees, evidence such as 26 dead pows tortured remains, cheney & Bush admissions of guilt & saying they ordered it to be done. Rumsfeld & Rice & Gonzalves are implemented.

Don't fret if the CIA burns tomorrow, the criminals in this case will be brought to justice. Just maybe not all of them.

63. The number of prisoners being water tortured could just be the tip of the iceberg
regarding their motivation for destroying those tapes.

The point being the "why" in it's full scope will never be known, but I believe whoever in the CIA or above the CIA ordered those tapes to be destroyed should be exposed and prosecuted or the CIA should be disbanded as a rogue agency and threat to our democratic republic.

67. remember, we have had eight long years
of replacing any agent in the FBI and CIA with * loyalists. Those agents who had any sense of a moral compass or conscience had been replaced by those who believe in loyalty only. Remember when they stated "they were cleaning house in the CIA?" Those who were let go for believing in the rule of law should be offered their jobs back. And, there are plenty of people in this poor economy who would love to have a chance at a government position. Panetta needs to "clean house" again and hire those who believe in the Constitution and the American people, not tow the corporate line. For multi-national corporations only owe allegiance to themselves--they could care less about the health or well being of our country.
