Deevloping: Turkish plane crashes at Amsterdam airport

(CNN) -- A Turkish airliner crashed at Amsterdam's main airport about 10:40 a.m. Wednesday local time, Dutch airport officials said.

"Some passengers are dead, some are injured and some are alive" in the crash, a spokesman from Schiphol airport's press office said over the telephone before hanging up.

Turkish media said the plane was carrying about 135 people.

The Boeing 737-800, which originated from Istanbul, Turkey, was trying to land at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol when it went down.

Airport officials had originally said that the plane was an Airbus 380.

Pictures from the crash site showed the plane split in three parts.

Kieran Daly, of Air Transport Intelligence, said the pictures indicated there had not been a widespread fire.

He said the impact had been severe but it could have been survivable because of the lack of fire.

Daly said their had been vast improvements in the materials used to build airplanes, meaning they did not burn as easily.

Still images shown on Dutch television showed the plane on the ground, with the tail section of the fuselage broken off, and a wide crack in the fuselage just behind cockpit. The jetliner did not appear to be on fire.

Broadcaster CNN Turk said one person had died and 20 others were injured.

"We are in the middle of a field now, approximately 5-6 km from the airport,� Survivor Mustafa Bahcecioglu told Turkish broadcaster Channel 24.

"The majority of the passengers are injured but there are people who are not injured. Around 30 ambulances have come here here,� he said.

Survivor Huseyin Sumer told CNN Turk by telephone: "The plane split into three parts. We are calling people to say the situation is not very serious but there might be casualties on the front side of the pane.�

Airport officials said the crashed jetliner was a Boeing 737-800, flight TK 1951 from Istanbul. Officials from the airline were not immediately available for comment.

The plane crashed near the furthest runway from the terminals at Schiphol, which is 20 km (12 miles) southwest of Amsterdam�s centre.

A Turkish Airlines plane carrying at least 135 people crashed in a field today while coming in to land at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, killing at least one person and injuring 20, airline officials said.

The airline said it could confirm one fatality and 20 injuries in the crash. Later, however, Turkey's transport minister, Binali Yildirim, said nobody had been killed, according to the Turkish website Hurriyet.

The Boeing 737-800 was severely damaged as it came down heavily in a field near the airport. Photographs showed the fuselage split near the front of the wing and the tail section sheared off. One of the engines was also sheared off a wing, although there was no sign of fire or smoke.

A Turkish Airlines official at Schiphol airport told Turkey's NTV channel that at least 80 passengers appeared to be safe. They were outside the stricken plane wading through luggage which had been strewn across the scene.
