Coleman Still Attending GOP Caucus Meetings -- Even Though He's No Longer A Senator!
By Elana Schor and Eric Kleefeld - February 24, 2009, 1:38PM

It turns out that Norm Coleman is still a member in good standing of the Senate Republican Conference -- in fact, it just so happens that he attended today's party lunch meeting on the Hill, and was also there for Inauguration Week.

What makes this remarkable is that Coleman isn't actually a member of the United States Senate anymore. Remember that his term expired this past January 3, and Minnesota has been without a Senator because of his lawsuit bottling up Al Franken's amazingly-narrow win.

"He's always welcome," Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) told TPMDC, adding that "we still think he has a very good opportunity" to win.

It's unclear whether Alexander has actually been watching the trial, which has seen some key rulings lately going against Coleman's position, diminishing the likelihood of a Coleman victory. In fact, the Coleman camp's press operation has taken to openly attacking the court's rulings.

courts, but the republicans are doing all they can to fuck that up and get a new special election, the republican don't give a fuck what it will cost or entail....they only see it as a chance to get another six year senate seat and keep one less senate seat from the democrats....A seat that Franken has won and the court will certainly rule in Fraken's favor,

However, Coleman's lawyer is the same asshole who distorted the election recount in Florida 2000, finally ending up in the US Supreme Court and stopping the recount.

Coleman & the republicans are trying to distort the facts and reality in the court in MN as well, hoping to get a special election, since the republicans would have nothing to lose only to gain by a special election being called for or granted.

20. Minnesota law makes no provision for a special election.
Coleman's camp has made it clear that they hope to get this into federal courts and argue that minute differences in the treatment of absentee ballots from precinct to precinct constitute unequal protection and are against the U.S. Constitution. That's the argument that the conservative majority on the US Supreme Court used to install Bush in 2000.

And yes, everyone, please contribute to the Al Franken for Senate Recount Fund.

The GOP is pouring plenty of money into the Coleman coffers in the hopes of at least delaying the seating of the 59th Dem senator as long as possible.

6. Constituency be damned!
I think it would make a nice movie. Winning at all costs. Because that's all that matters. Republicans, I'll never forget being called a Sore Loserman. And after you stole an election. Shame on you. But they have no shame. That's part of the trouble of republicans.

Thank god we won. Now get out of our way and let Franken by.

15. It's a state issue - I don't think the Extremes will get involved
Normy can't use Bush v. Gore as his precedent, so where is the rationale for the Extremes to step in?

19. Reminds me of a pretty funny Onion write up about frmr Sen (&Gov) Chuck Robb
http://www.theonion.com/content/node/27749

Former Senator Still Hanging Around CapitolAugust 21, 2002 | Issue 38•30

WASHINGTON, DC—Former Virginia senator Charles Robb, ousted from Congress in the 2000 elections by Republican challenger George Allen, continues to hang around the Capitol building nearly two years later, sources reported Monday.

"I saw him again this morning," said Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), who served on various subcommittees with Robb during his 1989-2001 senate tenure. "As usual, he was leaning against a column by the front steps, smoking a cigarette. I tried to act like I didn't see him, but he flagged me down and started asking me all these questions about new legislation and 'what's been up with everybody.' It was so awkward."

Coleman has just walked into (self) parody...
