GM to temporarily shut down 3 plants in Mexico
Source: Times of India

24 Feb 2009, 0431 hrs IST, AP

MEXICO CITY: General Motors Corp says it will temporarily shut down production at three Mexican plants because of slumping demand here and in the United States.

The automaker says its plants in Silao and Toluca will freeze production for five days in March. Two production lines in GM's Ramos Arispe factory will be idle for six days in March, while the whole complex will shut down for an unusual five-day stretch during Holy Week in April.

The company previously said it would lay off 600 workers in Ramos Arispe between February and March.

Mexico's auto exports plunged 57 percent in January, while domestic sales fell 28 percent. Production plummeted 51 per cent.

1. GM took the bailout money to build autos in Bolivia
according to a news story last week.
Altho it has also been reported Bolivia is now in financial meltdown, so Ihave no idea who will cars produced there.

2. Looks like GM just need Bolivian lithium for rechargeable batteries
"A new report from Reuters indicates that Korea-based LG Chem, who has been chosen as the supplier of the Chevy Volts lithium-ion battery cells, has been seeking talks with the Bolivian government."

"According to the report, Bolivia state mining director Freddy Beltran said “LG has expressed a willingness to start talks, to make a proposal. For what we know they have an agreement to produce lithium batteries for General Motors.”

"Their goal is to be able to tap into Bolivia’s vast Uyuni salt lake, with rivals Mitsubishi of Japan, and Bollore of France already in the race for the reserves."

I don't see any indication that GM plans or planned to manufacture cars in Bolivia.

3. This is just great.
The company I am laid off from supplies the Ramos plant. Only first shift is running right now. I guess they'll soon be laid off as well.

7. So GM should keep a plant open in Mexico
that is taking jobs away from US citizens just to keep mexicans employed? At least if they shut down that plant and pick up production here at a later date we may have a few more jobs. Another reason to strictly enforce immigration laws. If we want this economy to ever recover we have to stop the flow of illegals.

8. Are they opening a plant in the US while closing the one in Mexico?
I think I've covered the idiocy of your claim that illegals are the root cause of all our economic woes, too.

6. No need to make them if nobody is buying them.
