Press Trust of IndiaISLAMABAD, Feb. 21: Under attack from the international community on the Swat peace deal, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the pact was within the ambit of the country’s Constitution and there was “nothing to worry about”, even as Pakistani authorities and the local Taliban agreed to a permanent ceasefire in the troubled valley.
Mr Gilani said the Nizam-e-Adl Ordinance enforcing Islamic laws in the region would be signed by President Asif Ali Zardari only after the restoration of complete peace in the area. Justifying the enforcement of Sharia, he said similar rules were in place during British rule and similar steps had also been taken in 1995.
His comments came as the USA, Nato, India and Britain voiced concern over the pact with the Taliban-linked group, saying that it could be a ploy to enable the militant organisations to regroup. Hardline cleric Maulana Sufi Mohammad had been closetted with Pakistani Taliban commander Maulana Fazlullah for the past two days to get the peace pact endorsed by the militant group, who have been waging a bloody campaign in the Swat valley for the enforcement of Sharia laws. A truce has been agreed to, said a top official, who added “the government will take more steps to restore peace in the region”.
