Zimbabwe Opposition to Join Government
Source: NY TIMES

JOHANNESBURG — After months of resisting intense pressure from leaders across southern Africa, Zimbabwe’s opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, announced Friday that he would do as they have insisted and join a power-sharing government as prime minister with his longtime nemesis, President Robert Mugabe.

The opposition party’s decision to join the government was made unanimously at a meeting of its leadership in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital. It will usher in a new phase in the opposition’s decade-long struggle against 84-year-old Mr. Mugabe and his almost 30-year grip on power — a grip he tightened after claiming victory in a bloody, discredited presidential run-off election against Mr. Tsvangirai in June.

1. Tsvangirai will be dead in 6 months if he does that.
Besides, why should he have to share power in the first place? He won.

3. Yes, I meant Tsvangirai won.
I thought the old Soviet system under Stalin was the best way to rig an election. Force everyone to vote, but have separate ballot boxes for each candidate. If you drop your ballot in the wrong box, you are escorted right out to the train to Siberia.

4. Tsvangirai
Tsvangirai did not participate in the election. You can support anyone you like. But, the least you should is unmislead forumers.

5. Not 'misleading'; Tsvangirai participated in the first round

which Mugabe rigged enough to force a second round. With violent intimidation of his supporters, Tsvangirai withdrew from the runoff, to prevent more of them being killed: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7468091.stm

Tsvangirai won clear victory in Zimbabwe: US envoy

The United States called time on Robert Mugabe's 28 years as leader of Zimbabwe on Thursday, saying he had clearly lost an election last month and his opponent should now head a new government.

After talks with officials in neighbouring South Africa, US Assistant Secretary of State Jendayi Frazer said the people of Zimbabwe had voted for a change on March 29 even though results have still to be announced.

"According to what we know, Morgan (Tsvangirai) won in the first round and there should be a change," Frazer told reporters in Pretoria, citing results given by the independent Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN).

"The most credible results we have today are a clear victory for Morgan Tsvangirai in the first round and maybe a total victory," said Frazer, who was due to hold talks with Tsvangirai later on Thursday.
