Chairman: PPG could cut 4,500 jobs

PPG Industries could slash its work force by as many as 4,500 employees because of a severe drop in demand for the products it sells to automakers and the home building industry, Chairman Charles Bunch said.

In an interview with Bloomberg Television, Mr. Bunch said the cuts would come mainly in auto-related business units in North America and western Europe.

After PPG released its fourth-quarter earnings earlier this month, Mr. Bunch said the chemicals, paints and glass producer was considering more cuts because of dismal economic conditions. The company announced a restructuring plan in September that included trimming about 1,000 jobs.
