NBCPresident-elect steps up to the door of history amid high security, crowds
WASHINGTON - President-elect Barack Obama began his inauguration day by attending a service at St. John's Church followed by a short private visit at the White House hosted by President Bush and his wife Laura.
Earlier on Tuesday, Obama and his wife, Michelle, left Blair House across the street from the White House for the short ride to the church, even as a huge crowd gathered in front of the U.S. Capitol building and across the National Mall to witness his swearing-in at midday.

With the national holiday honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. falling on the eve of the inauguration, America's troubled racial history was in the spotlight.
