CAIR: Bush 'Abandoned' Americans in Gaza
Source: Yahoo

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group said today that President Bush has "abandoned" the more than 150 American citizens and their family members seeking evacuation from the Gaza Strip.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said it is not known if any American citizens are among the more than 1300 dead, including hundreds of women and children, and more than 5000 injured by Israeli attacks. Americans with family members in Gaza are now beginning to report the death or injury of relatives.

"It is unconscionable that a president, whose highest duty is to protect our nation's citizens, would abandon Americans in their time of greatest need," said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. "One can only speculate as to why these particular citizens are undeserving of protection or even rhetorical support."

CAIR has been seeking the evacuation of two American children, ages six and three, along with all the other Americans in Gaza. State Department officials told CAIR that an evacuation was being planned, but nothing has been announced. The citizens of many other nations have already been evacuated from Gaza.

5. If they are Palestinian-American, or supporting Palestinians
I bet Bush has already written them off as better off dead. Like he has with so many of the rest of us. x(

Why should they expect Bush to do his duty to help them. He hasn't done his duty to defend or protect Americans before?

Now, if he could use "Protecting them" as an excuse to start a war with some other country, then maybe he's at least pretend to make the effort. It would be weeks late, half-hearted, and poorly run, and wracked by corruption. But at least he'd be doing something.

19. I think that pretty well sums up my feeling about how he views the situation. Either that, or his
authoritarianism would get the best of him, and he would say something to the effect of, fuck'em, they shouldn't of been there anyway.

22. Last I checked, Israel was occupying Arab land, not the other way around
And if Israel had done to America what they have done to Palestinians, all patriotic Americans would be fighting Israel's occupation while singing "God Bless America."

25. I lost a lot of respect for Boxer when she rescinded that award.
Basim Elkarra is a Civil Rights leader here in Northern California. Boxer caved to anti-Muslim RW pressure. It was really pathetic.

33. Triple decker hypocrisy. Not only do we fund terrorism
but our president awards them the Medal of Freedom as he did that butcher from Colombia, Uribe, last week.

We're the last people in the world that can raise this question. The very last.

34. And yet, they are the ones providing this much-needed information on this treachery
Living abroad myself, I am highly aware of how important it is for the government to be ready to evacuate its citizens should all hell break loose. The State Department via the Embassy knows who and where I am and will hopefully help me to get safely back home should things pop off.

The names of those American dead should be read on the nightly news. This is a tragedy.

18. The US government didn't seem to care when the Israeli military murdered a US citizen
... by driving over her with a bull-dozer Tiananmen Square-style, so I really doubt they'd care about US citizens being killed with bombs, bullets, or being starved to death.

26. What about the 34 American service men killed on the USS Liberty by Israel?
In that case LBJ and Admiral John McCain threw them under the bus.

Shhh . . . don't say "USS Liberty" too loud. Someone here doesn't like us talking about it.

24. Very sad. . .
Sad on ALL SIDES.

It is a dirty rotten shame that some people in the middle east allow their so-called religious
leaders (no real follower of God ever teaches terrorism) to goad them into firing rockets, or sending suicide bombers
among people who have done nothing to them, and it is equally sad that a people whose
whole history has made them so fearful of genocide (for very damn good reasons) that they feel the need to use heavy-handed
survival tactics in return.

Truly the words of Mahatma Ghandhi apply: "an eye for an eye, and the whole world goes blind." What a sorry shame!

The whole debacle in the Middle East is horrifying, but it seems worse yet to me that a lot of the posters here are,
I fear, one sided. There is no difference between a murdered Palestinian and a murdered Israeli, but is seems to me that
many here think that the death of the Israeli is much more "deserved." Why is that?

The brutal truth is that some here seem to hate Jewish people or Israelis, and they
believe that Israel has no right to exist. They think that Israel should cede all of its territory to the Palestinians
and they honestly believe that is the answer. To me, it seems that many think that the ENTIRE ANSWER to the
problems in Israel is for the Israelis to give up and leave.

Think about that. Will that REALLY be the answer?

Clearly, either some do not believe that the Holocaust ever occurred (I DO--I have friends who were in the camps!) or
they know nothing of history. Why is it that so many believe that ALL of the sacrifices must be made by the Israelis?
Do the Palestinians have to do nothing at all? Why are the opinions of so many so lopsided?

I truly wonder. . .

31. I have to call bullshit on your No True Scotsman fallacy.
Bad people can be, and often are, quite sincere in their religious beliefs.

Only bigots think bad people can never REALLY be religious. Sorry. They are.
