(Condi) Rice departs predicting a world free from tyranny
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Capping four years as the Bush administration's top diplomat, a teary-eyed Condoleezza Rice bade a spirited farewell Friday to an assembly of several hundred State Department employees.

Rice was greeted by thunderous applause as she appeared in the building's C Street lobby to thank the staff in optimistic oratory that echoed President George W. Bush's 2005 Inauguration speech in which he said he would fight for freedom in every nation with the "ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world."

Rice said her own story — the first black woman to serve as secretary of state — showed how far the United States has come in making its ethnic, religious and racial diversity a catalyst for social progress.

"And that's why I know that one day there is going to be a world in which every man, woman and child will be free from tyranny," she said.

After her remarks Rice plunged into the crowd to pose for pictures and shake hands, tears welling in her eyes.

4. torture is tyranny, sweet-cheeks
so are indefinite detentions, extraordinary renditions, secret prisons, and a government that works outside the law...as is a government that gets away with those crimes...

6. One pathetic flunky....
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

What a let down to the cause of minorities in government. Suck ass for four years...got NOTHING accomplished but increased the size of her shoe collection....and supported these criminals and their illegal activities for four f*cking years. She needs to be the first black sec of state to be convicted of complicity of war crimes.

Beat it, bitch!

12. Thgere will be a better world in the future - but she is not the one who made it so -
She is not even the best Dr Rice. Susan Rice is an incredible person and I would bet she does more effective diplomacy within the next 2 months as UN Ambassador than Condi Rice did in the 4 years she was Secretary of State (her replacement is an improvement too!)

If you didn't see her confirmation hearing - she was incredible - intelligent, compassionate, knowledgeable and extremely personable. Here a link to get to a video of her hearing - (click on video) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x8092550

17. What pisses me off is that she's allowed to play out this charade.
They all are, Dick Cheney, the Dufus in Chief, all going on these talk shows and holding speeches blasting everyone but themselves. All because we wouldn't impeach. Now, they're allowed to walk free. War criminals in our midst, getting every privilege afforded to them. It's beyond sickening. Slap the cuffs on them and let the trials begin.

18. Condoleezza Rice Has Left the Building
Source: ABC News

ABC News' Kirit Radia reports: The outgoing Secretary of State made a ceremonial final exit from the State Department's C. St. lobby this afternoon and hundreds of department employees gathered to see her off.

"I’ve been so lucky to be the chief diplomat for a country that has never sought empire, and understands that power is only good when it is married with principle," Condoleezza Rice told the crowd. "And I have been so privileged and so honored to serve with each and every one of you. Because the men and women of the State Department, those working here in Washington, those working in the far corners of the earth, are the best example of what America stands for."

After her remarks she was thanked by rounds of applause from the gathered crowd. Rice lingered for about ten minutes shaking hands and posing for photos before walking outside amid more applause and getting in her motorcade.
