Governor may be leaning toward Kennedy
Two people close to Paterson tell AP they believe she'll be his choice

ALBANY, N.Y. - Officials say the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy will be the governor's choice to fill the New York Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Two people close to Gov. David Paterson tell The Associated Press they believe Caroline Kennedy will be his choice, but the governor cautions he's still looking.

The New York Times reports that during a New Year's Day open house at the executive mansion, Paterson said "It ain't nothin' till I calls it." The quote recalls a statement once made by legendary baseball umpire Bill Klem.

5. Here's what NYT says
"One person who has heard Mr. Paterson discuss the matter said that the governor’s impressions of Ms. Kennedy have always been high and that she remains a top candidate for the position. This person, who spoke anonymously because his conversations with Mr. Paterson were private, also said Ms. Kennedy’s chances had not been harmed by her recent media appearances.

Another associate of Mr. Paterson’s said he understood the situation differently. “No one around David has been impressed with her performance, and the governor has taken note of how much opposition has developed,” said this person, who has discussed the vacancy with the governor.

Again, though, the second person cautioned that the governor has not indicated whom he would choose and has done nothing to suggest he had ruled out Ms. Kennedy.

“He’s playing it real close to the vest.”"

There's a big push for Kennedy coming from his general direction. It's not so much follow the money as follow the influence.

I hope this isn't a done deal. New York can do a better - Slaughter, M. Cuomo, Nadler, Velasquez and dozens more who've done something besides picking up a phone.

33. Agreed
and the freeptards at first hated the idea of Caroline Kennedy as Senator, after hearing her speak, they're all for it. They're certain they can beat her in the 2010 election. If they can't, they'll have 2012 to try, and by that point in time, President Obama had better have some concrete results to show.

remember D'Amato? And before him, they had Buckley.

No, the wingnuts cannot count on getting a statewide elected official in New York all that often, but they do it every once in awhile. They cannot do it when we have a very strong candidate on our side, they can only do it when we field somebody weak. And that's how they see Caroline.

52. Pedigree or not
Caroline also possesses a law degree. Good ole Palin doesn't have that, nor does she have even a hair's breadth of the same intellect that Caroline has.

Fact is, Caroline stayed out of politics for a number of reasons, including the fact that she had the luxury of being a SAHM for most of her adult life. It doesn't mean she doesn't have the mind for politics--you grow up with a dad who was a president, and uncles and aunts and cousins with public service experience, you're going to have politics in your blood. We can't confuse the son of a GOP president with the daughter of a Dem president, who also happens to be the granddaughter of a major political force and the niece of a wide assortment of other politically minded people.

And while we're on the subject, with this nation in the current hands of the most politically corrupt and stupidest, dim-witted president in history, I'll take the lesser experienced, more intelligent daughter of a political dynasty in our country. NO ONE can be worse than the POS we've got in there right now.

They are both equally unqualified for the position.

Carolyn does however, have a pedigree...which ultimately is the usual qualifier for most political positions.

31. Anonymous DUers ....
Are, for all practical purposes, not in a position to determine whether Caroline is or is not qualified for the office of Senator of the good state of New York ....

Obsession with a pedigree seems an indicator that other, more valid points of scrutiny are being ignored in favor of a trivial peeve ....

Looking into my future: I do not see a time when your opinion of this situation is going to alter my thinking .... I'll let you know if this changes ....

I didn't state this because I figured most folks here would understand that.

But I wouldn't exactly go to bat for "umm, you know" Carolynn's intelligence either. We already elected twice an illiterate moron for president. We don't need an illiterate for the Senate.

But Carolynn does have a wonderful pedigree, and ultimately that all that anyone really needs for power in this country.

46. Caroline Kennedy
has an undergraduate degree from Radcliffe College at Harvard University and a law degree from Columbia Law School.
She graduated in the top 10% of her law school class and passed the NY bar exam.

She is exceptionally intelligent. Comparing her to Bush and Palin is absurd.

And, by the way, her name is Caroline.

36. Bullshit.
You're digging even deeper here.

Do you even know how the senate works? You do realize there are many senators, including a ton of Democratic senators, who did not hold any elective office or have any experience prior to becoming senator, right?

So why is it ok for them and not for Caroline? :eyes:

I shouldn't even touch on the fact Caroline Kennedy has proven her intelligent worth over the years, working hard for education in New York, while Sarah Palin hasn't accomplished much of anything, even as governor. Oh, but she went to like six crap colleges over the years...yeah, they're very similar.

Its just a chat board. Calm down. Rest assured I'm not going to personally veto her birthright ascension.

Oh I agree, there are a ton of leaders who have little or no experience. But virtually all were elected Democratically. If people want to *elect* unqualified people, that's just something we have to accept.

However when it comes to an appointment, the Governor has a responsibility to pick the BEST person for the job. Not the best pedigree.

Is Caroline the absolute most qualified person in New York? I do not believe so.

I do believe that she probably has the best pedigree of anyone in New York, perhaps the entire United States.
