Taliban gunmen ambush, kill 20 policemen

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Twenty police officers died when Taliban fighters ambushed the home of a government official in Afghanistan, a provincial governor's spokesman said Thursday.

The Wednesday night attack occurred at the home of Mullah Abdul Salaam, commissioner of Musa Qala district in the southern Helmand province, CNN reported. Salaam, who lives in the neighboring district of neighboring district of Kajaki, was in Kabul when the ambush occurred, said Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Helmand governor.

Ahmadi said Taliban fighters also killed the mother of one of the police officers as she pleaded that his life be spared.

Meanwhile, the British Defense Ministry reported a British marine died Wednesday in an explosion in the Sangin district of Helmand province while on patrol.
