RNC chairman candidate defends 'Barack the Magic Negro' song
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- A candidate for the Republican National Committee chairmanship said Friday the CD he sent committee members for Christmas -- which included a song titled "Barack the Magic Negro" -- was clearly intended as a joke.

"I think most people recognize political satire when they see it," Tennessee Republican Chip Saltsman told CNN. "I think RNC members understand that."

The song, set to the tune of "Puff the Magic Dragon," was first played on conservative political commentator Rush Limbaugh's radio show in 2007.

No matter how obvious it seems, we still need to publicly object.

14. Colin Powell was right this time: Until the GOP disavows Rush, they are a perpetual minority.
For which I guess we can be grateful to Rush. The worst POS to be born in the same year that I was.

Pure, fetid scum of the worst order, and a cheap and cowardly bully, as well.

If his ex-wives ever get together to write a book about the pedophile, I promise to buy it.

38. You may have missed it...
Rush and a few of his male friends were busted by US Customs for having Viagra pills in their luggage but no legal prescription to possess such drugs. They were getting back from a male only vacation to the Dominican Republic. The sex tourism business in third world countries is booming, especially for those seeking under-age thrills. Rush has never denied being a pedophile, and why would grown men go on a vacation together to a third world country while jacked up on Viagra?

47. Now I remember it.
My, that little contretemps sank like a stone. It doesn't necessarily prove pedophilia since EVERYTHING is on offer on sex tours. But it sure lays open the possibility that it's something you can't get at home.

15. if limbaugh can blast it across the country on
public airwaves to 20 MIL people and his screener stops all calls that might criticize him then i can see why the RNC thinks it's fine.

and obama isn't even in yet. unless dems start taking the talk radio monopoly seriously the GOP will continue to slow all progress and set new records in filibusters. talk radio has made the difference the last 20 years since the reagan killed the Fairness Doctrine.

37. I find the song obnoxious, but the term is interesting (and predates the song)
From a pop culture/literary point of view I find it interesting to examine films like "Lilies of the Field" with the idea that is behind the "magic negro" term. It does tell us a lot about our society--and of course those films were made by whites for whites so it tells us about white culture. Just as this man's giving the song out for a present tells a lot about him.

Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan is the first person to speak out against "Barack the Magic Negro."

"The 2008 election was a wake-up call for Republicans to reach out and bring more people into our party," RNC Chairman Mike Duncan said in a statement reported Saturday afternoon by Politico.

"I am shocked and appalled that anyone would think this is appropriate, as it clearly does not move us in the right direction."
