Mexico: 7 cops, drug gang arrested at cock fight
Source: AP

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Soldiers arrested the deputy police chief of a Mexican resort town and six other officers who were allegedly protecting drug cartel members at a cock fight, the Defense Department said Thursday.

Fourteen suspected members of the Beltran Leyva drug gang were arrested at the cock fight in Zihuatanejo, a Pacific beach town popular with foreign tourists, the Defense Department said in a statement.

Soldiers also seized 59 packets of cocaine, 40 bags of marijuana and 20 assault rifles.

Seven heavily armed police officers had been guarding the suspected drug traffickers, the department said. They included Zihuatanejo's deputy police chief, Timoteo Mata Cruz.

2. At least they are cracking down......
There are a lot of lives being lost in this war. There is also an awful lot of corruption in the police force down here. It's old habits, and it is changing...but of course, never fast enough to make it right.

I applaud the military for crashing the party, and I hope the drug arrests do some good. I also hope that vengeance doesn't lead to more innocent lives lost. This is a big issue down here, and the military is out in force. They look like young kids that are in the front lines, and it only makes me think of the young kids that WE stuff in the front line in our wars as well.

It's sad, but Mexico IS doing something. Whether or not they win in the end remains to be seen.

4. Isn't having the military patrol the streets a little unsettling?
I understand they are helping weed out the corruption in the police force, but having the military stand in as a policing force is a step too close to being a police state is it not?
