WP: Iraq Flap Shakes Rice's Image
By Dana Milbank and Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, July 27, 2003; Page A01

Just weeks ago, Condoleezza Rice, President Bush's national security adviser, made a trip to the Middle East that was widely seen as advancing the peace process. There was speculation that she would be a likely choice for secretary of state, and hopes among Republicans that she could become governor of California and even, someday, president.

But she has since become enmeshed in the controversy over the administration's use of intelligence about Iraq's weapons in the run-up to war. She has been made to appear out of the loop by colleagues' claims that she did not read or recall vital pieces of intelligence. And she has made statements about U.S. intelligence on Iraq that have been contradicted by facts that later emerged.

The remarks by Rice and her associates raise two uncomfortable possibilities for the national security adviser. Either she missed or overlooked numerous warnings from intelligence agencies seeking to put caveats on claims about Iraq's nuclear weapons program, or she made public claims that she knew to be false.

Most prominent is her claim that the White House had not heard about CIA doubts about an allegation that Iraq sought uranium in Africa before the charge landed in Bush's State of the Union address on Jan. 28; in fact, her National Security Council staff received two memos doubting the claim and a phone call from CIA Director George J. Tenet months before the speech. Various other of Rice's public characterizations of intelligence documents and agencies' positions have been similarly cast into doubt.

28. Why so intolerant and vitriotic aganist Dr. Rice?
From the comments on this thread, one would think that Dr. Rice was the only liar in
this administration and that she alone was responsible for Bush's arroange, incompetence,
and lies. I tell you, I am happy that Dr. Rice has to face her cupability but the tone of many of
responses here smacks of something other than pure outrage about the many faults of this administration.

wrong about the Soviet Union (Her area of study), she was incompetent in the lead-up to 9/11 and she lied through her teeth during the SOTU cover-up.

Why should she get a pass?????

15. Angelyne's a Hollywood model/actress
She drives around Hollywood in a pink Corvette. I think she once ran for mayor of Hollywood. One of the cable networks recently ran a story about her. Google "Angelyne" and you'll find out more than you ever wanted to know... (She WOULD be an interesting replacement for Condi, though!)

5. Well, I don't know about her "most" prominent goof
After all, her stone-brained comment after September 11 that nobody nowhere at no time no how could never, ever, foresee terrorists using hijacked planes as missiles. That remark has its own wing in the Stupid Hall of Fame.

But yes, her ignorance of the finer points of intelligence reports indicates that "details" aren't necessarily her forte. And in an administration where details aren't catalogued by the boss, the advisors have to know them. The best evidence of her screw up is the fact that Powell, making basically the same case as President Stupidhead did just a week or so earlier, omitted the reference.

Why did Dopey use the wrong intelligence, and Uncle Tom omit it? And why didn't the National Security Advisor know the difference?

8. Well, Gee-whiz,
Now how many is it so far, who have "fallen on their swords"? Does Condiliar make 4 or 5?
How can the Emperor keep letting his creatures admitt to either lying or stupidity and not ask for a resignation? This is so transparently a conspiracy to deflect blame from George II (Christos) that it is laughable! When are commentators going to start saying, outright, that the Prez is responsible and if he isn't, he should resign?

9. She's a lying cretin and will go down.
The heat will be so great that she'll have to resign, the only real question is will she take anyone down with her. If you look at the way she's been wiggling to keep herself out of this mess, you might think that she'd drag others down too. It's hard to say at this point but my guess is that she'll take the fall on her own and Cheney & Bush and company will be safe.

11. SHE LIED!!!
It really makes me mad that none of our fine media can say the word 'lie' anymore. Thay go to so mush trouble to not say that short little word...

"She has been made to appear out of the loop"

"she has made statements about U.S. intelligence on Iraq that have been contradicted by facts that later emerged."

"she made public claims that she knew to be false."

"Rice's public characterizations of intelligence documents and agencies' positions have been similarly cast into doubt."

SHE LIED! SHE LIED! SHE LIED!

Now wasn't that easy?

12. Too bad. Such potential.
She hitched her wagon to the wrong star, however. So did Colin Powell, for that matter. I think they both drew to an inside straight with Bu$h. Neither was politically astute enough to see the rocks and the reefs from the deck of the fast-moving SS Bu$h in 2000. Well, they are on the rocks now. Again, too bad.

They all seem to have made the same fatal mistake of believing that others had proper motives. All of them are now reduced to saying they weren't paying attention when it is clear that no one was paying attention because they already knew what the conclusion would be.

Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 04:12 PM by lightbulb
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2001/04/05/MN222557.DTL

A Chevron spokeswoman said yesterday that the oil giant has no intention of renaming the Condoleezza Rice and noted that board member Carla Hills also had a Chevron tanker named in her honor before she was appointed former President George Bush's trade secretary -- and the vessel has kept the name.

That was in April of 2001. Apparently Chevron had a change of heart, because not too long afterward they changed the name of Condi's tanker to the "Altair Voyager".

(edited for clarity)

19. If you go to the WH web site and look up the SOTU
There is an intersting slide show there. It shows Bush going over the SOTU, making notes, fact checking and rehersing the speech in front of his advisors. The WH web site contridicts the statement that he did not know, that he went off of the intelligence. Rice is falling on her sword for this bunch.
