Sky (TV) moves towards 3D broadcasts
Source: BBC

Sky TV says it has made a significant step towards bringing 3D television to British viewers.

The satellite broadcaster says it has successfully tested the delivery of 3D programming to a domestic television, via a high-definition set-top box.

Sky has been filming a number of events using 3D cameras over recent months.

Such broadcasts would require the use of 3D televisions, not yet available in UK stores, and viewers would need to wear 3D polarising glasses.

Earlier this year BBC engineers broadcast a Six Nations rugby union international in 3D to an audience at a theatre in London.

1. Decades ago, some predicted that all movie theaters would be 3D.
Not so much.

2. you might be right, but
the technology is coming. I'm hooked into a lot of it and there are mainstream CG packages being updated to accomodate the new technology.

Personally, I won't get excited about it. But there is a major push this time.

5. Disney is really making waves in that area. More and more films are coming out with 3D versions
And look at the NFL experimenting with 3D broadcasts coming up.

3. The weird thing is that decades ago I can remember a show called "PM

magazine" doing a segment on a new way of filming in 3D that DIDN'T require a special television or equipment. They interviewed the inventor of the special camera-a geeky fellow who was still looking for investors to produce the devices, so the technology was far from market. Then they shot about 30 seconds of the program using one of his cameras. I'll never forget it; it was a simple scene of the shows two hosts walking through a park and talking. It really did look like you were watching the scene through a window and not a TV-except there was one catch; The image shook slightly-much more in the foreground than in the background. The inventor said that once the image was stabilized "everything would be shot using this 3D camera". It sure seemed plausible around 1980, but I've never seen any mention of it since!

4. Just wonderful...
First someone one comes out with Digital TV and everybody has to upgrade their TV sets to DTV to view their crap,
and now someone's coming out with 3D, and of course that means new TV's.

Seems like a racket to me.

7. It is. Bringing better toys: good racket. Bringing wars: bad racket.
To me this is more what an economy is, bringing things we want and need to those who want and need.
