Conservative icon Paul Weyrich dies
Source: Politico

Paul M. Weyrich, 66, who helped found the Heritage Foundation and at one time was one of Washington's most visible conservatives, died this morning. At his death, he was president and CEO of the Free Congress Foundation.

Heritage announced this morning: "Paul M. Weyrich, chairman and CEO of the Free Congress Foundation and first president of The Heritage Foundation, died this morning around 1 a.m. He was 66 years old. Weyrich was a good friend to many of us at Heritage, a true leader and a man of unbending principle. He won Heritage’s prestigious Clare Boothe Luce Award in 2005. Weyrich will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, including son Steve, who currently works at Heritage."

Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform wrote this tribute: "Paul Weyrich created institutions and networks that incubated new and old powerful policies and strategies to advance liberty. ... He brought leaders of various freedom impulses together. Most of the successes of the Conservative movement since the 1970s flowed from structures, organizations, and coalitions he started, created or nurtured. Paul also lived a balanced life with work, family and his faith. We will miss his puns and wisdom and hard work."

Kathryn Jean Lopez of National Review Online, who had the first word of his passing, called Weyrich "a Washington conservative institution" and "a patriot who lived a long life serving his nation."

2. Used to see him on C-Span all the time
In the beginning days of C-Span he used to be a fixture on their call-in shows. A real SOB, nasty, obnoxious, without a heart or thought of anyone but himself and his cohorts. Wonder if he had a deathbed conversion like Lee Atwater and others? Good riddance is right.

7. Deathbed conversions....
....are rarely authentic. Usually made up by the people still alive in the room.

43. I saw the special on Atwater on PBS, and they mentioned he claimed to have "gotten religion"
and had been reading his Bible faithfully while in the hospital for treatment.

One of his personal friends revealed he had observed the Bible someone had brought Atwater was never taken out of its package in which it arrived.

26. Weyrich
I strongly doubt if the miserable old bastard was capable of a deathbed conversion. I wish no insult to his family, but do sincerely hope they bury him in an asbestos union suit for use beyond the river Styx. May his theocratic-fascist cronies join him there soon.

5. In his own words....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GBAsFwPglw

"Now many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome — good government. They want everybody to vote. I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down."

8. His friends and family clearly valued him and will miss him. I wish them comfort...
...in their grief.

For the rest of us, I'm relieved (in a quiet, sober, appropriate kinda way) that we have one less well-funded ideological termite gnawing at the structure of our Constitution and our society.

judiciously,
Bright

9. Weyrich is what passes for a patriot in some circles
Hard to square the notion of patriotism with someone whose career and fortune was dedicated to subverting the bedrock principles of the United States.

HE WAS THE PENULTIMATE FUCKING DRAFT DODGER

AND HATE MONGER

IF THERE IS A HELL HE CERTAINLY WILL FIT IN

In response to a 1999 controversy covered by the press concerning a group of Wiccans in the United States military who were holding religious rituals and services on the grounds of the bases they were assigned to, Weyrich sought to exempt Wiccans from the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment and bar them from serving the military altogether. Weyrich, as president of the Free Congress Foundation, led a coalition of ten religious right organizations that attempted a Christian boycott on joining the military until all Wiccans were removed from the services, saying:

"Until the Army withdraws all official support and approval from witchcraft, no Christian should enlist or re-enlist in the Army, and Christian parents should not allow their children to join the Army" ... "An Army that sponsors satanic rituals is unworthy of representing the United States of America" ... "The official approval of satanism and witchcraft by the Army is a direct assault on the Christian faith that generations of American soldiers have fought and died for" ... "If the Army wants witches and satanists in its ranks, then it can do it without Christians in those ranks. It's time for the Christians in this country to put a stop to this kind of nonsense. A Christian recruiting strike will compel the Army to think seriously about what it is doing." -- Paul Weyrich "'Satanic' Army Unworthy of Representing United States," Free Congress Foundation press release, June 9, 1999

...in his last days.

It should be said that Heritage is not as grotesquely horrid as the American Enterprise Institute or the Bradley Foundation. I would put them midway on the continuum of RW message machines.

they had a dinner for him recently. Check out the people who saluted him. Oi. On the plus side, there is a lot of age in this group. With Falwell's death and now this, maybe we are seeing the end of these conservative nutcases. Hopefully their progeny won't be at all successful in hijacking government as these people have been.
