Home Office to deport Zimbabwean family who fled Mugabe's regime

Woman whose husband was killed for his links to the opposition has claim for asylum rejected after eight years in UK

By Jane Merrick and Emily Dugan
Sunday, 14 December 2008

A Zimbabwean woman and her two daughters who fled the Mugabe regime are to be deported from Britain despite promises by the Government to protect the country's citizens.

Priviledge Thulambo, 39, whose husband was murdered by Robert Mugabe's men, and her children are being detained in a controversial immigration centre after being seized by immigration officers on Friday.

Friends of the family said the Home Office would be guilty of "murder by the back door" by deporting the three women. They are all Zimbabwean nationals, but because they entered the UK on Malawian passports – the only way they could escape the Mugabe regime – eight years ago, they have had their claims for asylum rejected.

After spending Christmas in the grim surroundings of the Yarl's Wood detention centre, they will be forced on to a flight to Malawi on 29 December. Because of their Zimbabwean nationality they are likely to be immediately sent to their home country, where they face torture or death.

They are in this desperate situation despite UK government policy that no Zimbabwean nationals will be sent back there unless they are members of the ruling Zanu-PF party.

It follows criticism last week of the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, who warned cabinet colleagues of an "influx" of Zimbabwean refugees fleeing the cholera outbreak.

This is nothing but cold blooded murder. It would be more compassionate to shoot them to death now than to have them been tortured and raped by Mugabe's thugs before they are ultimately killed.

12. Colour of hair etc is immaterial.
and you don't need to even hint at racism. Most racism in the UK is not black/white : its between blacks & Asians and Hindus & Sikhs. <in the UK the term Asian refers to those whose family origins are Indian sub-continent only>.

Total population of the UK is c. 61 million inclusive of immigrants 4.5 million and growing. Immigration is primarily from Commonwealth countries and latterly the EU.

Total population of the of the USA is c. 300 million. By proportion that is the equivalent of the USA having 22.5 million immigrants more or less recent immigrants.

Can your systems withstand that number ? The UK's cannot.

I suppose what might be more material would be could Indiana support and withstand 7% of their population of c. 6.5 million being recent immigrants ?

14. Nothing changes the fact that your "point" is incredibly irrelevant.
At least, it's irrelevant to folks who think
rape, murder and torture are extroardinarily
bad things, and that basic human decency requires
helping others to avoid them.

15. They're being sent to Malawi, because that's where they claimed to be from.
Edited on Mon Dec-15-08 01:20 AM by mycritters2
Malawi will send them back to Zimbabwe, almost certainly. What they'll face there is truly horrible. The Brits should be ashamed.

From the OP:
"they will be forced on to a flight to Malawi on 29 December. Because of their Zimbabwean nationality they are likely to be immediately sent to their home country, where they face torture or death."

16. Campaign to stop the deportation of the Thalumbo family - facebook campaign page
In 14 days time, on December 29th, Priviledge Thulambo and her 2 daughters Valerie (20) and Lorraine (18) will be forcibly put on Flight KQ101 bound for Malawi.

This will almost inevitably result in deportation to their homeland of Zimbabwe and their potential torture and death, a fate, which previously befell her husband, mother and brother causing her to flee Zimbabwe in the first place.

Only with your help and numbers can we make a difference to this wonderful family, who have provided so much to their local community.

You can read their story in more detail in this article published in the Independent on Sunday:

Home Office to deport Zimbabwean family who fled Mugabe's regime

In order to show your support to stop their deportation, please join the Campaign group that has been set up on Facebook at this link:
