Anheuser-Busch InBev cuts about 1,400 U.S. jobs

Less than a month after it gobbled up Anheuser-Busch, InBev lowered the boom on the American brewer's workforce, announcing Monday that it would slash about 1,400 jobs -- or 6% of the company's U.S. total.

Now known as Anheuser-Busch InBev, the Belgian-Brazilian brewer said about 75% of the cuts would come in St. Louis at the U.S. beer maker's headquarters and downtown offices. Some field offices and brewery locations will also feel the ax while 250 open positions will not be filled and 415 contractor jobs will be eliminated.

Most of the job losses will come by the end of this year and David Peacock, president of the company's U.S. unit, said it is a "necessary but difficult move" to keep the company competitive.

The reductions will be on top of 1,000 recent early retirements that came from a program Anheuser-Busch announced as part of its ultimately unsuccessful effort to ward off InBev's (BE:000379310: news, chart, profile) $52 billion takeover attempt earlier this year. Only salaried employees are affected.

7. These are really good paying jobs. The brewery down the road in Williamsburg is a great job

My football coach back in the mid 80's swept the floor for $15/hour or so back then

Kingsmill (hosts LPGA event) is a rather exclusive community dating back to the early phases of large gated golf course communities and about 1/2 the houses there ($$$) are owned by people working at the brewery. This will hurt if the economy if the get hit hard by this.

8. How will this affect the beer's "drinkabilty"???

If they let the Clydesdale "cleanup" crew go, it will be a mess. Here is a photograph of one of the guys taken just yesterday as he was pondering a future where the beer is no longer free and his cleanup duties will be limited to his own rear end.
