Obama economic plan aims for 2.5M new jobs by 2011 (radio address)

President-elect Barack Obama promoted an economic plan Saturday he said would create 2.5 million jobs by rebuilding roads and bridges and modernizing schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars.

"These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis. These are the long-term investments in our economic future that have been ignored for far too long," Obama said in the weekly Democratic radio address.

The goal is to it quickly through Congress, with help from both parties, after Obama takes office Jan. 20. The plan, which envisions those new jobs by January 2011, is "big enough to meet the challenges we face," he said.

Obama noted the growing evidence the country is "facing an economic crisis of historic proportions" and said he was pleased Congress passed an extension of unemployment benefits this past week. But, he added, `We must do more to put people back to work and get our economy moving again."

2. Obama certainly is ambitious where We The People are concerned.
That's exactly what we need. Unbridled ambition and good old fashioned American Ingenuity and even some http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Enginuity">enginuity.

3. Nice, but would only undo part of the net loss of jobs in the last eight years.
As shown in the table below, there are four million more unemployed people now than when bush was installed. And these numbers don't even count people who have had to resort to a McJob or have given up looking.

8. abra ca dabra ! and poof ! out of thin air comes jobs to which industry ?
details are sparse as to who is hiring. Most likely the fast food industry imo.

currently, the glass with the hole in the bottom is empty.
So, there should be 1 million jobs created by this time next year.

to do it the way he has already explained. Not much time in a short radio address to give a ton of details details.

7. It's a great start however,
I'd like to see something regarding the promises of closing all the tax loopholes for those companies shipping jobs overseas, etc.

14. Maybe you will.
If we could spend the money we're throwing away in Iraq on hiring Americans to do needed work on our infrastructure, right there we'd be ahead. Those workers would having spending money and that creates more jobs. And maybe -just maybe-we can put people back in the factories building wind turbines and solar panels which we can sell to other countries or trade for oil.

I think it sounds like a plan.

17. thats the gas tax plan. Everybody pays that consumes and drives on those roads
and bridges.
Speculators found out how much the US consumer can bend over and take it up the gas tank.
At least OPEC will crash harder for the bubble burst and besides, they won't be able to afford those over seas jihad adventures that are coming back to haunt them

13. I doubt this will happen
I don't see 2.5 million jobs being created in 2 years. Most economists have already said that the poor economy and job loss will continue through most of 2009. I just don't this many jobs coming in the next few years.

19. "Most economists" didn't predict our Depression until it was right about to happen, either.

"Most economists" are always wrong, from what I can tell.

20. Yes, economists are often wrong
My personal feeling is that 2.5 million jobs in two years is unlikely. I saw this economic collapse coming because I'm in Michigan. Our GOP tried to say we were in a one state recession but I felt our state was experiencing the problems the rest of the country would go through soon. I'm definitely no economic expert....just saying my opinion is that 2.5 million jobs is a stretch. I really, really hope I'm wrong.
