32. Nothing against the AZ governor ...
.. but I was kinda sorta hoping Obama would do away with that entire department. Could save a penny or two.

37. IF he wants to do it, he has to have someone in charge of the dismantling.
At the very, very least I really want the name "Homeland Anything" tossed on the ash heap of history with "Fatherland."

Call it Domestic Security. The Republicans will vote to kill it because it sounds girly.

6. We've heard a (very) little buzz here in Maine...
...that he may ask our republican Senator, Olympia Snowe, to take Commerce.

It would give our Democratic Governor a chance to appoint a replacement. I've also heard that Olympia is getting a little tired in the Senate, although she may feel a little less so since the extreme right is out of power as of January.

3. If true, after two years she can step down and take McCain's Senate seat.
Edited on Wed Nov-19-08 10:39 PM by ClarkUSA
And the fact that she's gay is icing on the cake.

15. How do you know her sexual orientation?
Edited on Wed Nov-19-08 10:38 PM by DesertRat
She's never identified herself as being gay.

Also, stepping down and "taking McCain's seat" is not as easy as it sounds. I think that she'd be in a much better position to do that if she stayed here and governed the state.

22. and in fact, I've heard her
deny explicitly that she's gay. She doesn't support same-sex marriage, but opposed our proposition which was similar to prop 8, but only because she didn't believe amending the AZ constitution was appropriate and we already have a statute forbidding gay marriage. So - great, yes. Gay, likely not.

What do you expect her to say? In a state like Arizona, no less. BTW, FL Gov. Crist has made the same denials and the same
policy positions and he is gay, too. No one cares there, either. It's not a big deal and shouldn't be a big deal.

33. Gov. Richardson is DLC, too.
Unfortunately, that seems to be a prerequisite to being elected as a western red state Democrat (NM only turned blue this year).
But both governors are loyal Obama supporters and will toe Obama's line gladly if asked to serve under him.

45. The only connection I see in a cursory search is...
...her help in the federal investigation of OKC bombing accomplice Michael Fortier while she was U.S. attorney for the District of Arizona.

Other than that, I would think she has some experience in the areas of customs and immigrations being a governor of a border state.

I don't know how much the annual budget of the State of Arizona is, but I would guess that DHS, at 52 billion dollars last year, is many times that amount.

I really wanted to see Richard Clarke get DHS Secretary, as he tried like hell in vain to get Bush to pay attention to Al Queda. And, he's been the only federal official that I know of to have the sack to publicly apologize face to face to the families of the victims of 9/11.

You can be a "former resident," but you can't change where you were born.

By the way,

I'm a native Illini and a very happy transplant to Arizona. I'd prefer to keep our Janet right here thankyouverymuch. She's a great counter to all the wingnuts running around our state govt.
