Jobless claims rise for second week (363,000)
http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/story.asp?column=Economic+Report&siteid=mktw

The four-week average of initial claims rose 5,000 to 350,500 in the week ended Feb. 7. It's the highest level in a month.

The increase was higher than expected.

The consensus forecast of Wall Street economists was for the four-week moving average to rise by 1,000 to 345,000.

The number of initial claims in the week ending Jan. 31 rose by 6,000 to 363,000. This is the highest level since the week ended Dec. 6, 2003.

3. I can't believe
Dubya let them raise the expectation level so high.

It's been bothering me since it was released on Monday. 3.8 Million jobs THIS YEAR is one hellofa mountain to climb. What happens in September when they haven't created even 1Million total? Who will they blame?

Or, if you really want to go tinfoil on this, the only other excuse for not creating as many jobs as projected is some National Disaster...

Politically, it was stupid to project this............

7. I'm not sure what the mechanism for that is?
"Well, we thought we were going to be able to keep you guys on staff, but... d@mnit... it's just such a cold, dreary day out there... you're all fired"

I can see hiring being slightly effected, or "hours worked" in some hourly jobs... but fired for the weather? I can only think of a handful of people who should be fired based on the weather and they all work for local TV stations predicting the weather.

10. How desperate can they be?
The weather caused the layoffs? Even the children left behind know that's ridiculous. How many layoffs have other winters caused?
