GOP looks to serve as check on Obama, Democrats
Source: AP

WASHINGTON – A top House Republican says there is a willingness to try to work with President-elect Obama to get things done.

But Rep. Eric Cantor also says to expect Republicans to serve as a check and balance against the power held by Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California.

Cantor, a Virginia Republican, is running to be the second-ranking Republican in the House — the job of minority whip.

Of course the keeper of that trust has to be honest. That would mean a culture change in the GOP.

10. The GOP are so graceful in defeat aren't they?
But it's no surprise that they fear that the Democrats will do the same thing they did because THEY DID IT! They are just too stupid to see how they've gutted and damn near destroyed this country with their ideological and failed, FAILED policies.

They could use some of their noses rubbed into the stinking piles of putrid shit they've created so they're aware that it was because they refused the Democrats any say they've created the very problems we have.

:grr:

15. Well repukes...
...isnt that what having 2 parties is all about? Oh, and can we stop calling them 'the GOP'. Theyre so ashamed to be 'republicans' now, that they rebrand themselves as 'the GOP'. We became 'the democrat' party because of them. It sounds petty and ridiculous, but it gets my goat every time i hear it uttered.

16. They don't have to worry.
Until proven otherwise, I fully expect the Dems to continue acting as if the Pugs are in full control of things anyway. Reid's already proving my point with his abject refusal to take any sort of firm leadership stand RE Lieberman.

Yes, I'm a cynic. Yes, I've been proven right too many times to count. Yes, I hope I'm wrong.

42. There are a few moderate Repukes
like the two Senators from Maine, who might be persuaded to end a fillibuster. All we have to do is flip a bit of pork Maine's way, and we get two for the price of one.

I wouldn't even worry about Joementum. He'll lose his chairmanship, and will spend some time in the doghouse, but on everything that does not involve supporting Israel and fucking over Muslims, he's been on our side.

27. Maybe
If they truly want to be the loyal opposition I have no problem with that. Our system of government works on checks and balances so if they want to work with but in some cases save the Democrats from themselves that is fine. If their idea of checks and balances is to obstruct everything that the Democrats want to accomplish so in the next election cycle they can throw around the idea of it being a 'do nothing' Congress I say stomp 'em like the bugs that would make them.

28. Which of these 19 Senate Rs up in 2010 do you think might be vulnerable to pressure?
IMO It's not too early for the DNC to start making some of them think twice about being obstructionist, by mobilizing fired-up Democratic Obama supporters back home, and by slating potential strong Democratic challengers for their seats.

37. Grassley may retire, or we may run a winnable Dem against him
In the Iowa DU group, we've floated former Gov. Tom Vilsack for that job. Though we don't particularly like him, he is a Democrat.

On the other hand, Grassley is rather moderate, so he is a decent guy to have around if we have Republicans around.

31. odd, when the GOP had power in all branches of govt...
they tried, and often succeeded in marginalizing D's. Now they are running scared, and want to offer an olive branch.

Compromise is the base of politics, since the RW refused to compromise in the past, I doubt they will gain much respect in this regard from a heavily controlled D congress.

The policies of the neo-cons have come very close to ruining this country, they have little that might make them "respectable". Let them be marginalized and wanting.

32. unless President Obama
DEEMS to reverse many of the Chimp's signing statements and policies, he doesn't really have to listen to anyone he doesn't want to. Remember, GOP? It's a dictatorship? If the House subpoenas you, you needn't show up. If the House vetos a bill, you just issue a signing statement.

You all DO remember this is how you left the office of the President, right? I look forward to listening to you all whine incessantly about the abuse of power and the constitution, as Obama has to override your guy's MASSIVE abuses in his effort to re-instate the constitution, which will benefit the GOP at this point. but, I know you all are too angry to see that.
