NAACP's Lawsuit Put On Hold (Virginia)

A lawsuit that makes racial allegations against the Virginia State Board of Elections and Governor Kaine has been put on hold. The NAACP postponed a hearing in federal court Thursday morning, but wouldn't go so far as to withdraw their complaint.

This is what we know: The State Board of Elections went into mediation with the NAACP and the Advancement Project for several hours Wednesday. We know the board presented the groups with up-to-date voting facts.

What we don't know is if this was enough, to make this pre-election drama go away for good.

"Since I didn't know what they were thinking when they filed the lawsuit, I don't know what caused them to postpone it," stated Virginia State Board of Elections Chair Jean Cunningham.

Cunningham says she is happy that the NAACP is backing off from its lawsuit claiming that the Commonwealth is not prepared for Election Day. A hearing was scheduled at the federal courthouse in Richmond, then postponed, but not before several local Republican parties, including Albemarle, came forward to support that board.

bCivil rights group backs off Va. election lawsuit
By STEVE SZKOTAK – 1 hour ago

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The NAACP won't seek a hearing before Election Day on its federal lawsuit questioning whether Virginia is ready for potentially massive voter turnout.

An attorney for the civil rights group said Thursday there was not enough time to analyze new information the state has provided on the number of voting machines and polling places.

The NAACP alleged the state failed to provide enough voting machines to handle the crowds, particularly in majority black precincts. The lawsuit asked for paper ballots to be provided as one option if lines got too long.

State election officials and Democratic Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said the state has added thousands of new voting machines and poll workers since 2004.

"I understand why people are very, very anxious about Tuesday. It's a huge election," Kaine, an Obama ally, said on WRVA radio in Richmond.

1. A mediated settlement is probably the fastest and best way to handle this.
I take this news as a positive development.

The United States is a LIBERAL Country.
