Van Hollen wants prosecutors to monitor state polls
The Capital Times — 10/29/2008 2:49 pm

Democrats say state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen's plan to send about 50 prosecutors to state polling places is a partisan attempt to intimidate voters.

Van Hollen, who recently lost a lawsuit to get the state Government Accountability Board to cross-check about 1 million voter registrations before the Nov. 4 election, has announced that the assistant district attorneys would be used to enforce voting laws.

...

Democratic Party of Wisconsin chairman Joe Wineke said Van Hollen, who is co-chair of the GOP's presidential election campaign in the state, is playing politics.

"This is nothing more than a shameless political stunt designed to appease Van Hollen's Republican Party bosses and manipulate the election in their favor by disenfranchising voters," he said.

Election monitoring threatens to be a contentious Election Day issue after Van Hollen's stinging loss in court and a recent call by Republicans to former military, police or firefighting personnel to monitor inner-city Milwaukee polling places.

Wis. AG to dispatch cops to polls

Associated Press - October 28, 2008 7:25 PM ET

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says he'll deploy more than 50 assistant attorney generals and state agents around the state Nov. 4 to guard against election fraud.

Van Hollen said Tuesday the attorneys and the agents have been trained on election law and voting rights and will be available to assist local prosecutors. Department of Justice spokesman Bill Cosh declined comment on their exact locations.

The Republican attorney general also has formed a task force with Milwaukee prosecutors to tackle voter fraud cases.

He filed a lawsuit last month demanding state election officials verify the identities of tens of thousands of voters before Election Day, but a Dane County judge threw that action out last week, saying Van Hollen didn't have the authority to bring such a suit.

5. what can I do?
I just took next Tuesday off from work so that I could do something to help Obama. I canvassed one weekend for Kerry, but was wondering if there is anything I can do to balance out the poll watching. If there is anyone out there that knows how to go about being a poll watcher or has another idea of what I can do, please let me know.

8. no cameras allowed in the polling place unless there is a press person behind them
Those are the election observer rules in Wisconsin.
