San Diego: Registered Democrats, Republicans closing in on even for county
Source: Union Tribune

SAN DIEGO – Democrats continue to gain ground on Republicans in the county, trailing by 379 registered voters in the latest figures released by the Registrar of Voters Office.

Democrats have increased their ranks at a rate of 2-to-1 over Republicans since December 2007 and almost certainly will take the lead in registration for the Nov. 4 election when final numbers are released, given current trends.

County election officials say there are between 15,000 and 20,000 voters left to input into the system, a slow process that could stretch to the weekend.

The latest numbers released Wednesday show Democrats account for 539,560, or 36.26 percent of registered voters. Republicans have 539,939, or 36.28 percent.

As of Dec. 7, 2007, Democrats had 435,857 voters, or 34.4 percent. Republicans had 495,613, or 39.1 percent.

18. Yes! Darrell Issa must go! He's Blackwater's biggest fan!
To all in his district, vote him out!

Robert Hamilton is Issa's democratic contender. Show Hamilton some love, please!

19. I wouldn't object.....
If Duncan Hunter's son loses his bid for his dad's seat either.

When I moved up to Washington State, one of the pluses was never having to have Duncan Hunter as my representative again

6. The City of San Diego has been majority dem for a few years now
the city council has more Democrats than Republicans. The mayor is a pro-gay marriage republican that won his reelection bid in the primary by margins heigh enough that there was not a run off next week - he won with over 50% in the primary.

The county now has turned blue as well - which is exciting as hell for me! :)

12. Yes he is a Dem - and hes endorsed by the Democratic Party
http://www.sandiegopolitico.com/2008/07/democrats-endorse-aguirre.html

"SAN DIEGO – Incumbent City Attorney Michael Aguirre won the overwhelming endorsement of the county Democratic Party last night and said afterward that he was eager to ramp up his re-election campaign.

“We'll soon be announcing our campaign consultants and our campaign manager and I'll be going door-to-door,” Aguirre said. “We're also setting up 50 coffees throughout the city, and we'll be carrying out a very vigorous campaign.”

Aguirre, a Democrat, faces San Diego Superior Court Judge Jan Goldsmith, a Republican, in the Nov. 4 election. While the race is ostensibly nonpartisan, party support can be helpful to candidates through mailers to party members and other assistance.

Aguirre finished second to Goldsmith on June 3 in a five-person race that included two other Democrats, including City Council President Scott Peters. The county Democratic Party did not endorse anyone in that race because it did not reach a consensus about which of the candidates was most electable, said party chairman Jess Durfee."

21. Not in the Mountains of Far East San Diego County
the Appalachia of SD County, densely inhabited by hard-right anti-tax government-hating kooks back in the hollers.

but after 8 years of getting screwed by the 'pukes, culminating in a collapsing real estate market, I think things are a-changin'--even these morans are waking up--used to see a bunch of "W" stickers, usually on poor blue-collar workers' worktrucks :puke:

but no more...even out there, things are (slowly) getting better--many fewer mindless knee-jerk * defenders...however, unfortunately Duncan D(unce) Hunter is a lock to be coronated into his daddy's seat. Sigh.

Oh well, you can't win them all:eyes:

15. I worked as a pollworker in the last election, having moved to
San Diego and shocked by the number of Republicans and worked to get out the vote. Well, so many Democrats would walk up to get checked in and just announce their party affiliation. I didn't understand until one kind lady told me that once upon a time you had to keep it a secret in this county. Ugh!

16. San Diego is interesting like that. Almost exactly split Dems and Repubs.
Beautiful part of the state, with gorgeous weather, too.

I'd love to see it become more solidly blue.

17. It will be down to 378 the week after the election...
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 06:38 PM by calipendence
I'm moving up to Portland, OR from here in San Diego the week after the election, but you'll be happy that I did already vote a good Progressive Democratic slate on my absentee ballot already so you didn't lose my vote for this election.

Another important area to focus on turning blue down here is the county board of supervisors, which as been a Republican MONOPOLY for the last decade or so.

They are the ones that hire the folk that hire the voter registrar's down here, which have given us so many problems with elections in the past. If we can just get one or two Dems on this board, I think that would make a BIG difference to ensure one can keep the corruption out of the politics down here.

20. Another one eh?
There are SO many San Diego "expats" I know of in Portland, Vancouver, and Seattle that I joke someone really needs to open a couple of *.bertos and a Rubios or two to make us feel at home.
