Former US mayor jailed for lying

The former mayor of the US city of Detroit has been
sentenced to four months in jail for obstructing
justice in connection with a sex scandal.

Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned last month, had admitted
to lying under oath to try to cover up an affair with
his former chief-of-staff.

The punishment was part of a plea deal under which he
also agreed to pay $1m (£500,000) in restitution to the
city.

Kilpatrick has also agreed that he will not run for
office for five years.

In the end, Kwame Kilpatrick went to jail Tuesday
showing no remorse, shaking his head as a judge
chastised him for his crimes, smiling at family and
friends, at times clowning with the prosecutors who
helped put him behind bars.

He didn't drop his defiance even as Wayne County
Circuit Judge David Groner called him arrogant and
filled with hubris.

2. as much as I am thrilled Kwame is in jail...I wonder what the headline
will be when Sen. stevens goes to jail for lying...it will be called on 'corruption' charges? or 'false reporting'...Only SOME (read Democrats or blacks but especially black Democrats) people are liars, others are dissemblators of the truth.

7. Pardoned
I have a feeling that Bush will end up giving him a pardon just like he did with "Scooter" Libby.

10. Bush did not pardon Libby
All he did was commute the 30 month sentence. Libby is still guilty of committing a Federal Felony.

3. It wasn't just lying.
He also assaulted two police officers attempting to serve a warrant for the obstruction case. That secondary case was also dismissed by Michigan's Attorney General as part of the plea agreement. The plea agreement was almost set aside yesterday as Kilpatrick's lawyers 1) stalled on him signing away his law license (part of the plea agreement) and 2) the judge said any monies in KMK's special "funds" (several million at last count) needed to go towards his $1M restitution if it was legal to do so.

Kilpatrick belongs in jail for what he has done. His arrogance and defiance (eye-rolling, sighing, shaking his head about how "wrong" everyone else is) during sentencing was a sight to behold. He honestly thinks that Detroit was blessed for having him as mayor. I say good riddance. If his mother weren't running against a whackjob GOPer, I'd be tempted to vote her out as well. She is in just as much denial about her "perfect son" as he is...and that's hard to top.

5. It isn't over for him, either.
Kym Worthy hasn't given up investigating the murder of the stripper, either.

6. Yep; saw that in the Free Press today.

Plus the Synagro deal could still find its way back to the mayor and/or his family, so there could be a lot more fallout before it is all over.

4. That should teach him.
That should make him think twice before he decides to be arrogant and defiant. The nerve of him!

9. What bothers me is he still hasn't accepted responsibility
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 09:47 PM by BreatheOnMe
Even after he accepted the deal, he gave a speech about how it was the media, Gov. Granholm, the prosecutor, and the Detroit City Council who were responsible for his down fall. I still don't think he thinks he did anything wrong.
