McCain Funded Work Of Palestinian His Campaign Hopes To Tie To Obama
Source: Huffington Post

As Politico's Ben Smith reported on Tuesday, the McCain campaign is demanding that the Los Angeles Times release video in its possession of a party attended by Barack Obama and Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi.

"A major news organization is intentionally suppressing information that could provide a clearer link between Barack Obama and Rashid Khalidi," said McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb, citing Obama's friendship with Khalidi, who is now a professor at Columbia University.

-snip-

During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.

A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi's Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, "West Bank: CPRS" on page 14 of this PDF.)

2. I guess he was hoping that if he waited till...
the last few days of the race, his own ties to Rashid Khalid wouldn't come out till after it was all over.

A lil' reminder to ole' Johnny Boy, it's the 2008 eletions, not the 1908 elections.

3. I am honestly beginning to think that McCain doesn't want to win
He has made more missteps than a guy taking his first lesson at Arthur Murray.

5. Then McCain isn't so bad
Surely, even tho' McCain's mob (I do mean mob) are attempting to make something of Obamas weak link with the Khalid, I'm kinda impressed McCain actually did something positive for the long suffering Palestinians. Tell me, what is the crime/sin here? Should we really support what is essentially a cruel, oppressive state of Israel and cast our brothers and sisters into the dead sea? Help me understand the unconditional support of Israel in this country?

7. Your unconditional support of Palestinians is just as troubling.
There are no angels in this skirmish.

20. Oh be serious
There is no question the Palestinians are treated appallingly. Do a little research and you will be more empathetic to the intolerable conditions of these people.

22. I agree that their conditions are awful

and that Israel have at times acted appallingly there; BUT Palestinian leaders have also treated their own people appallingly, and the Arab states have used the Palestinians as pawns.

There are no angels there, and I don't support anyone *unconditionally* -except perhaps the leaders of the peace movements: the one real hope for the future.

I am against the Occupation, and in favour of freedom of speech for people like Rashid Khalidi. However, I disagree with the idea that Israel can do nothing right, just as much as I disagree with the idea that it can do nothing wrong.

Incidentally, if talking to a PLO supporter/spokesperson makes you suspect, then all recent Israeli Prime Minsters would be suspect on the same grounds.

23. True
Israel acts appallingly all the time. Just wish Israel would let them have a few acres of their fertile land and a house that would stand..Hell, it is their land after all.

21. It's not unconditional
It's simply a wish for a little compassion and empathy for a long suffering, beleaguered people, that they might get some help and support. Why would you assume it's unconditional?

He is an empty suit that flaps whichever way the wind is blowing.

12. I'll give you one good reason...
Dual citizenship. How many Americans live in Israel? How many would be put at risk if Israel were to be invaded or nuked.

We could debate the Israeli/Palistinian conflict or the perils of dual citizenship till our eyes popped out, but that should be left to bigger names with bigger mandates like our next president, Barack Obama. Inshallah.

But the fact remains, any attack on Israel would kill probably thousands of Americans.

Just remember, the more we talk, the less we bleed.

10. Apparently not.
Sometimes I think no one on his campaign can use the Google, or the Wikipedia, but it even goes beyond that.

Things like public records, memory, and common sense are mysteries to them.

I've done more fact-checking, more contemplation, and more planning on my ~240 posts on DU than they've done on their whole damned campaign.

11. Which is why I yawned at the news. McCain's approach to everything: Ready, Fire, Aim.
Same way he picked Palin. He was throwing the dice. They kept him away from the craps table and now it's showing in EVERY decision he makes.

15. In any case, what is the great crime here?
Just because Khalidi is Palestinian and critical of Israel doesn't mean that he is a terrorist, or that Obama is evil if he speaks to him. I am sure Obama has spoken to lots of people with differing views to himself, including RW Republicans.

I am a moderate Zionist and oppose the too-frequent demonization of Israel - but I also oppose the demonization of Muslims/Arabs/ anyone who has views that one disagrees with.
