Poll Finds Dwindling Approval Ratings For Dodd, Lieberman

By MARK PAZNIOKAS | The Hartford Courant
October 28, 2008

A new poll finds Connecticut's two U.S. senators battered and vulnerable as they approach difficult crossroads in their long public careers.

The job approval ratings of Sens. Christopher J. Dodd and Joseph I. Lieberman fell below 43 percent this month, placing both men in a political danger zone.

The problem is especially acute for Dodd, a key player in the federal response to the financial services crisis, who is gearing up to seek re-election in 2010 for a record sixth term. "I'm not terribly surprised by it," Dodd said Monday night. "People are angry. This is the most difficult time economically in my political life."

- snip -

The numbers are worse for Lieberman, a self-described "independent Democrat": 53 percent disapprove and 41 percent approve of his performance. Lieberman could not be reached for comment.

2. Loserman I could care less about, but to lose Dodd would suck.
I hope Lamont makes another run at Loserman's seat.

and someday becomes our Senator. I just really like him a lot. He sends constant updates every few months on what he is doing and sends questionnaires out all the time. No one else in CT sends me anything except during election time. Not sure what Joe Courtney does as he is not in my district but I like him to.

3. When asked if Obama was a Marxist... Lieberman said it was a good question.
Can't wait till he's out of there.

6. He was a slippery weasel, lying about being not being a Republican.
Too many were hoodwinked two years ago. He'll be off the stage in four more years though, unless he repents.

7. He essentially ran as the Rethug in the race two years ago. He was voted in by the Rethugs.
I should know, my parents are Repukes and voted for him and I voted for Lamont. The Rethug candidate got no support. He needs to get kicked out of the Dem caucus no matter what the Senate total is. He can go kiss up to Linday Graham and McLame when the election is over.

16. That's so idiotic on LIEberman's part
Since when are his own economic views substantially different than any other liberal Democrat, despite him now being a Connecticut-for-Lieberman or Independent or whatever? If Obama's views reveal Marxist principles, so do Lieberman's. Leaving your party because they didn't want to kill enough Iraqis doesn't somehow also change your liberal voting record on economic issues, Joe...

4. I followed the leadup to the Bailout intensively, and Dodd tried to add real oversight
He also tried to slow the process down for more thorough consideration, but was knocked down in the stampede. He's getting a bum rap.

8. Dodd will be a major player in getting this back on track...
These are the polls now - after a year working the Obama Administration, Dodd will be beloved once again - as he should be.

10. He is in thrall to major contributors from the finance sector.
He repaid them by pushing the bailout. But lost the respect of his constituents.

17. I would need to see the evidence of that.
I think that has been the smear thrown at him in the past but I have not seen the proof behind it at all.

Dodd is a good man.

11. I feel for Dodd. I think he's a stand up guy.
I hope that he can make up for what he thought was a necessary evil; his backing of the bailout.

As for Lieberman...

He's got his man-date.

13. Is there anything you CT DU'ers out there can do to get LIEberman out of congress?
Can the state legislature initiate a recall election, an impeachment? I'm not familiar with Connecticut law myself.
