McCain cuts size of shopping spree
Source: Politico

The McCain-Palin campaign said Sunday that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has used only one-third of the $150,000 in clothing and cosmetics that the Republican National Committee purchased for her in high-end shopping sprees after she was chosen to run with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

McCain said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that “some third of that money is given back — the rest will be donated to charity.”

“She lives a frugal life,” McCain said. “She and her family are not wealthy. She and her family were thrust into this,” McCain said. “She is a role model to millions and millions and millions of Americans.”

Palin’s spokeswoman, Tracey Schmitt, elaborated: "A third was returned post-convention. Many of the remaining clothes have never been worn. She wears a lot of her own clothes from Alaska. Regardless, what wasn't returned will go to charity after Election Day." ...

1. That doesn't really matter.
The fact that they went out and spent such huge sums of money on clothes for her in the first place was a dumb move.

3. To be fair, they're Republicans. Who could have anticipated
that anybody would put that kind of scrutiny on Republicans?

Ever hear about Bush's $2k suits? Did you know the gun Cheney used on Whittington cost $20,000--and had been given to him?

13. Also the story is already cemented in the public's mind
they fell prey to the same tactic that they always use

Get it on Drudge
Get it onto headlines
no one will pay attention to the retraction/correction/actual story

4. “She lives a frugal life,” McCain said. “She and her family are not wealthy."
Palin's net worth is estimated to be $1.2 million. I guess that for John "The Gigolo" McCain, $1.2 million is pocket change, so it's not surprising that he says she's not wealthy.

10. These were ALL PAID INVOICES
If, in fact, some of these were returned after their convention, such returns should have appeared on the FEC reports as well as the expenditures.

"They can't make this stuff up," is a statement we have heard often.

Either McShameful can point to the refunds or he can't. Until he produces documents he, Palin, and their spinmeisters need to STFU.

They can produce documents when it is convenient to them, so produce the documents that they have been reimbursed by the lobbyist who purchased and billed the campaign for more than $150,000 of Palin clothing.

11. That would be admitting to FRAUD and THEFT then, McCain.
Coz your own records say $150,000.00

So which is it, McCain? Palin's elite not-so-hockey-mom shopping spree on RNC donations...or THEFT and FRAUD?

18. My theory is that a lot of aides picked up so clothes for themselves
while shopping for Sarah. Alternatively, "clothes purchases" were a means of laundering other purchases or money transfers. Did anyone ever track down the bill from Barney's?

20. They spent the money for her campaign. They want it both ways... to claim she's ordinary but make
her look extraordinary.

You don't see that with Obama or Biden. You certainly see them caking and slathering on the spackle on McCratered.

Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 12:29 AM by mrih
I predict we will probably start seeing a couple of t-shirts, or Wal-Mart Jeans, or symbols of "SEE I'M AN AVERAGE PERSON" too being spewed out and worn by Palin.

REVOLTING !!

25. "She and her family were thrust into this"
How does this McCain statement square with Palin's claim that, upon being offered the VP position, she didn't even blink before blurting out, "You betcha!"? haha One statement or the other is a lie; of course, that's nothing new for either of these jerks.
