On ‘SNL,’ Fey as Palin, and Palin as Palin

By JULIE BOSMAN
Published: October 19, 2008
Anyone tuning in to “Saturday Night Live” hoping to see side-by-side versions of Gov. Sarah Palin — the real thing and the Tina Fey version — would have been disappointed. But Ms. Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, did appear on the show Saturday, wearing a bright red suit and her trademark glasses for the opening sketch. She left most of the comedic heavy lifting to Ms. Fey, who played Ms. Palin giving her first news conference as the nominee for vice president. Lorne Michaels, the longtime executive producer of the show, and the actors Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin also appeared in the sketch.

Ms. Palin stood next to Mr. Michaels as they watched the news conference, with Ms. Fey at the lectern playing Ms. Palin, from a television backstage. “Why couldn’t we have done the ‘30 Rock’ sketch that I wrote?” asked Ms. Palin, her left hand planted impatiently on her hip, referring to Ms. Fey’s critically acclaimed but underwatched comedy series. "Honestly,” Mr. Michaels answered, “not enough people know that show.”

- snip -

In the sketch on Saturday, Ms. Fey, wearing the same red suit and half up-do as Ms. Palin, reprised her now-famous impersonation of the Alaska governor. Ms. Palin popped up again an hour into the show on the “Weekend Update” sketch, where she joined in a rap routine that made fun of Senator John McCain’s smile, and she cheerfully waved her arms in the air when the chant ordered “all the mavericks in the house” to raise their hands.

- snip -

The McCain campaign tightly limits Ms. Palin’s availability to the traveling press corps, but in rare forays to the back of her campaign plane in the last several weeks, she has told reporters that she “would love to” make a guest appearance on “SNL.”

1. Thanks for the blow by blow. I couldn't stomach
to actually watch it, but was somewhat curious.

4. Please watch it.
The first skit was all right but the second one was pure comedy gold. I thought we were going to have to take my wife to the hospital after Todd Palin walked out.

9. That's how I felt. I was concerned that someone she would win the hearts
of more idiots by being able to laugh at herself. I am glad to hear it was "much ado about nothing".

15. She wasn't funny or witty or even self-depricating.
The whole thing was LAME. You should watch it... she scored no points for herself except with those already obsessed with her.

6. Sounds to me like they insulated her from the live audience.
Putting Fey onstage and Palin backstage with Lorne kept her from getting boo'd.

I know New Yorkers are known for their sensitivity and politeness, but the combination of her recent comments about "people who love america", and the fact that she's shown no talent for humor so far, required limited audience exposure.

8. I watched it..
and I have to tell you, it was much ado about nothing. Her contribution to the show was as minimal as you can get.

13. She looked like the Douchebag she is! Thanks for the "Ass shot" at The Good Nite Wave-Off,though.
I guess she wore those knee high boots so all the NeoCon Boys can jack-off on You tube.

16. Baldwin was funniest in those sketches. The rest looked like it was approved by the repukes
who probably wouldn't allow anything more pointed coming at wolf-shooter Palin.

18. Palin ate up appearing on SNL as any former beauty queen would.
No harm, no foul. She looked just as idiotic and vapid as she usually does, and it was clear that no one on the show was in the slightest bit impressed to be having to appear with her.

A wash.

24. What I see is someone who thinks, if she laughs at the same time,
That means people are laughing WITH her. No, dear--they are still laughing AT you.
