Palin's rural adviser quits
Source: AP

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Gov. Sarah Palin's rural adviser resigned Monday amid criticism of the governor's record on hiring Alaska Natives.

Rhonda McBride, who is not an Alaska Native, made the announcement in an e-mail to several Native leaders, saying there needs to be more Native voices in Palin's administration.

...

Natives bristled early in Palin's administration when she named a white woman to a game board seat held by a Native for more than 25 years. An Athabascan Indian eventually was named to the post after protests.

Relations worsened after Palin didn't remove a game board chairman who once suggested that Alaska Natives missed a meeting because they were drinking beer, seen as insensitive since the Alaska Native community has high rates of alcohol abuse.

Alaska Natives make up about 20 percent of the population.

2. I'm proud of Rhonda for doing this.
She's a great little reporter (really little, about 4'9") who used to do lots and lots of "on location" stories about life in the Bush, Native issues, stories about their celebrations and their problems on KTUU. I missed her reporting when she left to go work for Sarah

4. I live on a SD Indian reservation, and there's little
love for her around here. I don't know about other Indian populations in other states, but that's the way it is here. I know that there's some division among various Indian tribes and factions as to whom to support, since McSame does, frankly, have a good record in dealing with Indian issues and is well-respected in many parts of Indian country because of it.

OTOH, she just lost an appeal of an Alaskan native tribe's subsistence rights lawsuit, and has really been blasted by many natives for her handling of that and her ham-fisted, heavy-handed approach to many native issues, such as fishing and hunting rights (subsistence rights) in Alaska, her often-arrogant dismissal of them and her total lack of understanding of the complexities involved in many such issues. No surprise there, of course.

5. McCain
Apparently you missed the Abramoff stuff and the fact that McCain as chairman of the committee that deals with such matters had a hand in deflecting many inquiry's into such matters. I can't give chapter and verse, but this is a dishonorable man, who has been a bully and a coward all his life, just like little georgie. A man of privilege who gives not a hoot for Native Americans or any of us for that matter. Please do some research before defending his record.

16. The majority of SD native americans
are solidly in the Obama camp. However, I'm not sure that'll be enough to make a difference in the state as a whole. If the vote were to be close, then I can see the Indian vote maybe making a difference. That is what happened back in 2002, when Johnson retained his senate seat against his then-challenger, John Thune (who went on to topple Daschle in 2004 and is now one of the worst members of the senate, unfortunately); Johnson squeaked by with the votes from Pine Ridge (there are nine reservations in SD altogether, and Pine Ridge is the largest). But I don't expect that to be the case with this vote, the state is simply too solidly republican. As I've said, McSame, or any republican, could shoot babies on live teevee and SD would still vote republican. It's just the way it is. And with the abortion referendum also on the ballot (yes, indeed, here we go again, they just can't give up), that might bring out even more of the conservative base than would normally vote.

I don't know about OK, though, sorry.

7. Well, this is pretty weird...
The article didn't say, but I'm guessing this woman wasn't one of Sarah's High School buddies like many of her appointments have been.
