GM to close Wyoming (MI) Stamping plant
Source: WoodTV.com

Chris Lee, the head of GM's stamping division, made the announcement at 2:15 p.m. to a stunned group of employees. The 36th Street plant has 1,400 workers at this time.

Lee told the first shift employees the work at the plant would be phased out, and the plant would be closed in 14 months.

Greg Golembiewski, the president of UAW Local 730 that represents the stamping plant, told 24 Hour News 8's Rachael Ruiz the mood in the meeting was like a funeral, and the workers were shocked and devastated. Golembiewski said there was no indication the plant would be closed.

An employee told 24 Hour News 8 the reason for the plant closing is to mainstream the manufacturing and help save in transportation costs. The Wyoming stamping plant also makes dyes.

I'm so glad Wall Street got it's blank check while what's left of our manufacturing sector founders. A perfect example of Wall Street over Main Street and most will completely miss it.

1. This what GM does with a $25bn bailout/loan
As Harry Truman said: how many times do you have to be hit over the head before you realize who is hitting you?

GM, by this closing, shows their utter contempt for the American worker and for producing
product in America.

Their 'bailout' should be immediately revoked and they should be left to swing in the wind
of bankruptcy.

GM is not an American company..they go to China to make deals with Shanghai Motors
to develop and build Hydrogen cars, but they can't manage to make a go of it in the
US because they don't respect the American worker and consumer.

To hell with GM. Write your representatives to demand that the bailout money for GM be
revoked immediately. GM deserves to die.

2. Ridiculous....
GM is also opening a new Volt plant in Flint, MI. Their production is shifting. You may want to inform yourself before posting this drivel.

16. WTF? Check out what they just announced for Flint...even if if doesn't fit your thesis.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/25/AR2008092504056.html

It's how they actually ARE spending some of that 25 billion.

Meanwhile, you wanna yell at some people, yell at the imitation progressives around here who won't spend any of their socially-conscious dollars actually buying a UAW product. But they're always glad to run them down any chance they get.

6. Hi Jayfish,
I'm originally from GR too. Haven't you guys had enough trouble there? The upside is that almost EVERYONE I know there is voting Obama which would never have happened until the catastrophe of the last 8 years.

12. I Don't Know What The Upside Could Be.
Once you shudder a monolith like that it tends to stay that way.

15. BIG PICTURE - The upside is that people are waking up to what these kinds of policies bring.
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 07:26 PM by NoMoreLurking
In the long run these policies will get reversed because the pendulum is finally swinging the other way. In GR people refused to see the damage that was being done by Bush's policies for a LONG time. Obviously not happy that people are losing their jobs, but I am happy that people are waking up.

7. So if Detriot folds over and essentially all cars are imported...
How would this be any different than the oil situation that we're now in except that at this point in time South Korea and Japan are our allies? We'll be sending our money over seas and we would further bleed this anemic country to death.

8. 1400 jobs gone, property values will plummet and school districts will fold.
Open since 1936.

The small city of Wyoming has been a nice community for years. A little rough around the edges but the loss of a million a year won't do anything to help.

Just can't beat the economy under the republicans.

10. I Grew Up 50 Yards From That...
building. I went to, what was at the time, one of he most modern and feature-rich school in the state because of that plant. It's a terrible loss and much bigger than anything I can remember happening in the area.

13. I went to Catholic Central and when I saw what those schools had, I drooled.
In later life I have worked in the Kalamazoo area. There is a school district there that was devastated when GM pulled up stakes. The result has been an impoverished school district for 20 years and its really terrible to watch that happen.

And at this time Michigan demands a HS curriculum that is on steroids and makes NCLB look like a walk in the park. How these schools will cope I just can't imagine. But they can kiss their support staff goodbye.

17. Let er' rip! Just be careful, cause when times get tough, lots of cops fill the town coffers...
with so-called "speeding tickets", AKA, "speed traps" where they shut you down to 35 from a
55 mph zone, and so on, with an _expensive_ radar unit, for our safety, of course.

That's how it was back the they heydays of the 55 MPH speed limit in the 70's and 80's.

14. My uncle retired from Fisher Body 25 years ago.
This is devastating for GR.

I grew up northwest of there near the Lake, and I really need to move back to help with retired uncle and my mom, his sister.

With office furniture not selling like hotcakes, where are the jobs going to come from?

I hope that some of the plants around GR will be retooled for mid-size and small car production.

Ford is saying that they're going to rework their European cars for the US. Is there any hope that GM could do something similar with Opel? I had two of those when they were being imported and I loved them. Lots of zip!

18. 100 percent UAW American vehicle buyer here. Screw the Japanese crap!
Had a Chevrolet P/U with 315,000 miles on it, no problems.

Take that and stuff it, Toyota Tundra's.
