Palin mistakes fans for protesters at Va. rally
Source: AP

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin accidentally mistook some of her own fans for protesters Monday.

A massive crowd of at least 20,000 spread across the parking lot of Richmond International Raceway. Many on the outer periphery, more than 100 yards from the stage, couldn't hear.

They started chanting, "Louder! Louder!" Palin thought they were protesters, looked toward them and said, "I hope those protesters have the courage and honor to give veterans thanks for their right to protest."

Some in the crowd had stood in place for more than three hours on a sunny day without shade.

6. I hate that phrase - vets haven't given us any rights. The Constitution guarantees them.
We The People decided that we ALL have an INHERENT right to protest (and all those other rights the Constitution guarantees).

It was not "given" to us by anyone or by any document.

I wish the Republicans would stop that blathering bullshit line, especially about how it's "veterans" and "soldiers" who give us the right to protest/free speech/wank off in our bathrooms/whatever.

18. As a current member of the US military
I agree with you 100 percent!

I am so utterly sick of that line. As you say, it is in the Constitution, and the Constitution alone, that We The People gave OURSELVES all our current rights. We The People are the source of all sovereign power, but I fear that this out-of-control adoration (borderline worship by some) of the military could presage a dangerous shift in the source of sovereignty.

I think what they mean is something more like "soldiers have DEFENDED our right to (fill in blank)" but even that is BS. When was the last time the US military fought a foreign enemy intent on our conquest on American soil? Never. One can argue that WWII could have gotten to that point without our involvement, but that would be just about the only realistic example, and even that's a hypothetical.

52. See #51. Not a war of conquest.
Britain only intended to punish us over Canada, not invade and re-take us. Most Americans never even saw a British soldier, because there were so few actually sent over.

The point is not merely one of semantics or pedantry. At no point in US history has our military been in a fight for the survival of the United States itself, which would be what it would take to truly have credit for having actually defended the freedoms of American citizens. It is an integral part of our military psyche, but a cursory review of history shows it has never happened.

I stand by my original comments.

In fact I have taught it.

Revolutionary War - no foreign enemy involved as we were all British subjects on both sides. Britain was not intent on our conquest, as they already owned us; they were using armed force to put down an insurrection, they were not invading a foreign sovereign country. We were intent on breaking away from their sovereignty, hence the term 'revolutionary war' or 'war of independence.' No foreigners, no 'conquest.'

War of 1812 - Britain was at no time interested in our conquest. Not even a consideration. They only sent adequate forces to mount punishment raids and revenge attacks for the US invasion of Canada and the burning of York. British forces were inadequate to take and HOLD even one US city, mainly due to prior obligations in the Napoleonic Wars. Foreigners, but no attempt at conquest.

American Civil War - again, no foreign enemy involved, unless you count my ancestors as the 'foreign enemy.' Civil wars are, by definition, wars between the same people within the confines of a single nation-state. The Confederacy never at any time intended to conquer and rule the North. Not even a consideration. No foreigners, no attempt at conquest.

to "grant" us freedoms, either. Had the north simply let the south secede, there would have been no loss of freedom in the US. At no point were the rights and freedoms of the United States under threat, excepting that, once the north decided to invade the south, there was the possibility of the south winning and forcing the north to, ummmmmmm, just remain the north and go on as always.

The military in that instance did nothing for guaranteeing or granting us freedom - what they did was pound the south into submission so that the United States could be re-united.

Perhaps you could read some history.

As to the Revolutionary War, that one could possibly be considered the one time that the military helped "grant" us freedoms - however, the truth is, the founding fathers still thought that those freedoms and rights were INHERENT in all human beings (at least, white human beings), and we were fighting so that those INHERENT rights would finally be allowed to flourish.

Remember, the bill of rights doesn't begin "We grant people the right of free speech" - it says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

That is, it says that the government cannot infringe on rights that are INHERENT in all human beings.

Even the Constitution doesn't grant us freedoms - it recognizes that we have them for the simple reason that we are human beings.

(Also, as to the Revolutionary War, one could also make counter argument that, since there was no United States at that point, those military men weren't actually defending or granting anything to any US citizen - it's a semantic issue, but an important distinction to make, I think)

68. This is extremely well-said
You state it in a way I've never really thought about it - that the Constitution simply removed and forever forbade any undue limitations to the inherent rights and liberties of man, without actually granting any of those itself, since it could not grant what man is already 'endowed by his Creator' with. Therefore the Constitution is merely the recognition and enshrinement into human law of what is already a priori granted by Natural Law.

How very Enlightenment of them! Could you imagine having a debate involving dozens of people who were all that intelligent, that well-read, and that grounded in nuances of political philosophy? Could we even find so many people today without having to recruit every professor of Constitutional law from every university?

Now if you'll indulge some serious pedantry for a moment:

The American Civil War can't be classified as a civil war at all! It was actually a failed Second American Revolutionary War, a failed war of seccession/independence. For a conflict to be a 'civil war,' two or more factions within the same political unit must be vying for control over the entire political unit. Since the Southern states declared independence, they no longer saw themselves as part of their former political unit, and had no intentions of trying to seize power over it - taking Washington so as to rule the US as a single unit was never on the agenda, therefore not a civil war.

61. Thank you very much! I did not, of course, mean to disparage the military at all,
(which disparagement you made no mention of - I only include that line now because I forgot to add it to my first post to keep people from thinking that, since I believe in truth and fact, I therefore must hate the military, which accusation is entirely untrue).

I agree with you that there is no point in our history that the military has ever actually and technically defended this country from invasion or attack. We kind of did against the Japanese in WWII, but, for fuck's sake, let's be honest even though the fuckers bombed Pearl Harbor, there was no goddamn chance in hell they would ever actually attack on US soil; certainly never successfully.

69. Yes, I have noticed here at DU;
that clarifying facts about X automatically means you either completely support X or completely oppose X, not that you might merely wish X to be presented in a factual manner.

I never thought for a moment you were disparaging the military, although even if you had there is no crime in that, and as a member of the community of citizens from which the state derives its sovereignty, you would have an unassailable right to do exactly that. In effect, you're the boss so you can criticize all you want.

The Founders never meant for us to have a standing military (army at least) at all, many considering a standing army a dangerous threat to liberty. We've managed to prevent that for two centuries now, but just because it has always been so does not mean it will always be so.

Personally I think the US military is too big, too widely deployed across the globe, and way too well-funded.

On the Japanese attacking US territory in WWII...I'm just waiting for someone to metion Kiska and Attu in the Alaska Territory. Hey, could Palin use that as foreign policy experience?

If they are fighting for free speech rights, then they are also fighting for a woman's right to self-determination and reproductive rights. They are also fighting to keep church and state separate and prevent theocratic rule.

But, those rights don't fit into your christofascist playbook do they, Sarah??

Old Testament: love it all! Especially killing gays and witches (and secretly adore the part about owning slaves)!

New Testament: love Jesus, ignore what Jesus said - being kind, turning the other cheek, living a life of poverty, giving to the poor until you are also poor...soooooooooo inconvenient - best to ignore it! But love Jesus!
