American Paul Krugman wins the Nobel Prize for economics

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences says that American Paul Krugman has won the Nobel economics prize "for his analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity."
The award, known as the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, is the last of the six Nobel prizes announced this year and is not one of the original Nobels. It was created in 1968 by the Swedish central bank in Nobel's memory.

60. I heard him on the political round table "This Week" yesterday....
...and he demonstrated that he was vastly more knowledgeable than the other talking heads, basing his comments on knowledge and insight rather than superficial popular misconceptions. It was very revealing.. He's a brilliant and insightful economic Nome..

Of course this just gives more fuel the the argument by the RW than the Nobel prizes are prejudiced toward "liberals"

I do believe the Nobel label still carries great weight and his commentary now will be given more respect.

141. yes, i remember 20 years ago thinking and speaking out that reagonomics was
a bad idea for average Americans, and not sustainable as an economic model. We've all here know this for a generation. Too bad most of us suffered through it's consequences before it collapsed-(wage stagnation, destruction of worker rights and unions, heath care privatization and profiteering, Enron style deregulation and market manipulation, outsources government services to political allys for profit, offshore corporate tax sheltering, wholesale selling of public assets at bargain prices into private hands, ballooning public deficits, and the final nail in the coffin: widespread unregulated greed and corruption of investment markets). Still there will be spin about it still being a viable model, witness the blaming of the crisis on the democrats trying to get home loans for lower income folks through fannie/freddie- i've heard people saying things like "ever thing would be fine except those poor minorities who were irresponsible with their mortgages" NEver mind that 80% of the sub-prime market was NOT generated by fannie/freddie, but the private equity markets- and the problem is not the sub-prime mortgages - only 6% of a mortgage market, but the BETS WALL STREET MADE ON the mortgages. they created exotic instruments with no regulation that they had no assets to back them up- 100 times the value of the mortgages themselves. Unbelievable. The fall of the roman empire is comparable to the destruction the republican economics have had on our country.

Or is this some kind of logic system where that conclusion is not true?

I dunno-- how about we ask John McCain and his rapidly sinking campaign if liberals can bite?

Dr. Partridge, I presume?

I've loved Paul Krugman for years! For a long time his was the ONLY voice among the column-writers who spoke out against bush - back when it wasn't cool, and only all-American "patriots" were allowed to speak (pro-bush, of course).

Article: SHOULD THE FED CARE ABOUT STOCK BUBBLES?

It was a time of unprecedented prosperity. And it was also a time
of soaring stock prices, a time when the market became a national
obsession. As more and more ordinary Americans began buying stocks,
many responsible people became worried. True, some market gurus
argued that changed fundamentals made the higher price levels
reasonable--and those optimists had, of course, been right so far.
But still there was a sense, almost a consensus, among sober heads
that this was a classic bubble.

Even if stock prices had gone crazy, however, what if anything
should be the policy response? Should the Fed raise interest rates
and pop the bubble? Or would this simply bring on a recession?
Anyway, if consumer prices are stable, should the central bank even
care about asset inflation?

Like most debates in which nobody really knows the answer, this
one became peculiarly intense and bitter. Those who wanted the
bubble popped accused the other side of irresponsibility, warning
that continued financial excesses would inevitably lead to a painful
hangover. Their opponents argued that as long as there were no signs
of inflation, to raise interest rates would be an act of pure spite
and would itself bring on a gratuitous recession.

So even in times of prosperity, a central banker's lot is not a
happy one. The funny thing is that 70 years later the great debate
about the market and monetary policy, the one that raged in 1928 (bet
you thought I was talking about current events--well, those too)
remains unresolved. What, if anything, should the Fed do when it
thinks the market has gone mad?

You can tell that this question has gotten Greenspan upset: He's
so worried that he's become--it scares me to say this--
comprehensible. Everyone knows he believes stock prices are too
high. But the market is no more convinced now than it was the first
time he warned about "irrational exuberance," back when the Dow was
around 6500. So he can't seem to talk it down. Should he do more?

The answer, I'm almost convinced, is no: leave the economy alone.
But I'm not totally sure, so let me give both sides.

anti-Krugman faction vocal on DU for a while. And all because Krugman pointed out the obvious: Hillary's health plan was better.
He preferred Hillary. Big deal.
"Knock Obama"? How silly is that.
Onwards to victory.

70. Yes, he preferred Hillary's health plan
And to give Obama credit, he has moved towards that better plan.

He also disagreed with Obama's stance on Social Security, saying that it gave Republicans too much ammunition in their campaign to dismantle it.

Krugman is brilliant and has for a long time been one of the few voices of reason in this country.

And when president I hope he will go the whole way. Hillary's plan was not perfect either, just better. universal, single payer is where we need to be. Given the economic meltdown the next president has a Roosevelt-like opportunity to make change. I hope Obama wants to be that change maker. Could make the difference for the next two generations.

I have not followed this guy until recently when his name kept popping up during the primaries and then more recently as he has appeared on various news shows. But if you think about it, since the complexity of what is happening with the worldwide financial collapse is a bit different from the last go-around some 80 years ago, it might be prudent to get the best and brightest in there to try to formulate a way out of this.

98. He wrote a book...
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 11:03 AM by AlbertCat
...way back in 2003 called "The Great Unraveling" where he talks about "bad economics wrapped in the American flag". It's derived from his columns in the NYT. It is easy to understand and, at this point in time, prophetic. It's still worth a read and is like a real time summation of how we got here.

http://www.amazon.com/Great-Unraveling-Losing-Our-Century/dp/0393058506

P.S. The 1 star reviews at Amazon(all written in 2003)of the book are hysterical now. They all talk about his discredited "school" of economics, and "how can he possibly blame the bubble (not the one that just burst, mind you)on Bush?! It all Clinton's fault!" and the usual "he's a socialist" stuff. These days, the utter wrongness of these opinions is funny....well if it weren't so sad.

36. Great news for our team!
Though it looks like it's more for his academic work on world markets and trade than for being a plumb line speaking out against the Bush Administration, but in every way, I think we can see this as a feather in the liberal cap!

A stake through the heart of "Chicago School" economics!

Maybe now, more people will start reading Krugman, and fewer people will stop reading Thomas Friedman and his "flat-headed, flat world" nonsense!

I hope that Krugman has since come back into the fold, post-Primary?

Krugman: Obama Supporters Are Like Nixon
Columnist Paul Krugman alienates his liberal allies: "I'm not the first to point out that the Obama campaign seems dangerously close to becoming a cult of personality."

Krugman's Obama problem
Posted by:
Economist.com | NEW YORK

<snip>

But of course the audience had bigger things on its mind. Clinton-Obama! Clinton-Obama!

Mr Krugman’s purpose today was to promote his newish book, The Conscience of a Liberal. Lately, a lot of the country’s bloggier liberals have been wondering where his conscience went: why, how, and why again is he supporting Hillary Clinton’s candidacy for the nomination over Barack Obama’s? Well, to our surprise, all these questions can be answered fairly with a single word. A big one, but not a long one: race. Race, that old black-and-white magic, is a major preoccupation of this Conscience’s take on our politics today. (Mr Krugman finished his manuscript 11 months ago, when no one really thought that Mr Obama stood a chance. His views on race seem genuinely to precede his having to take Obama’s candidacy seriously.)

According to Mr Krugman, race is the sole reason that "movement conservatism" has stolen the reins of American politics, de-regulated finance, destroyed the unions, caused global warming, stolen babies’ candy, etc etc. It is only race and emphatically not, as Thomas Frank and others have argued, any “moral values” canard. Mr Krugman says you can tell the whole story in five words. Since the Democrats’ reluctant embrace of civil rights in the early 1960s and Nixon’s Southern strategy of 1968: "white Southerners started voting Republican." (He cites for evidence his colleague Larry Bartels's, "What’s the Matter with ‘What’s the Matter with Kansas?'")

But the audience is being thick, and it keeps roaring. Isn’t Obama cool? Isn’t Hillary a drag? At this point our affable, reedy and somewhat tweedy speaker becomes a bit nervous. He has, after all, published a lot of reasons that might explain why Hillary makes the better candidate. In his well-read column, he’s said variously that we should fear a backlash against Mr Obama’s “mystique” and admire Hillary’s relatively concerted focus on winsome economic issues; he’s noted too that Mr Obama has never faced a serious Republican and is anyway not sufficiently partisan.

THE KRUGMAN-OBAMA CAGE MATCH CONTINUES....When Barack Obama's campaign decided to post a bit of oppo trash talking against Paul Krugman on its website, they didn't know what they were getting themselves into. Krugman hasn't let up since, and Matt Yglesias comes to the rescue here. But after performing rhetorical CPR, he adds this:

That said, I'll freely grant that I'm getting a bit tired of defending Obama and his campaign. Stuff like this from Krugman clearly hurts them, but the easiest way to deflect claims that Obama is the more conservative choice would be for Obama to say so himself in a clear and direct way. Given that Clinton is very much running as her husband's wife, it should hardly be impossible to make the case that establishing continuity with the moderate Clinton administration is the moderate choice.

Believe me, I sympathize. But look: Obama has clearly chosen his course, and there's really no way for him to give a wink and a nudge to folks like Matt and me to let us know that he's just kidding about all this kumbaya stuff. After all, it's part of his whole appeal to both independents and moderate conservatives, and his candidacy depends on that. So if you're a liberal in Obama's camp, you just have to cross your fingers and trust him.

Because in the end, this is what it all comes down to. Is Obama kidding or not? Does he really believe that he can enact a progressive agenda by reaching out to Republicans and bridging the red-blue divide, or is he just saying this as a way of shaping public opinion and winning an election? And if he does believe it, is he right?

As a lot of us point out endlessly, both Obama and Hillary Clinton have very similar views on both domestic and foreign policy. Not identical, but pretty close. So really, the key question for progressives ought to be this: Which political style is most likely to advance the cause of progressivism? The soothing, post-partisan Obama style, or the more directly political Clinton style? Can Obama move public opinion in a progressive direction via stealth? Or will the public need something more? I suspect the latter, and it's the reason I continue to have more of a skeptical Krugmanesque attitude toward Obama than an upbeat Yglesias-esque one.

was probably frustrated with her inability to succeed with it.

I understand that in the meantime, however, Obama's plan has moved closer to the others.

143. Krugman had a difference of principles with Obama.
Krugman's core principles, such as the importance of universal health care and the strengthening of labor unions, made him prefer John Edwards and Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama. I shared his principles, and I shared his choices. Race never had anything to do with it.

Since Obama clinched the nomination, Krugman has been writing consistently in his support. Several times a week, Kruggles has launched an intelligent, insightful attack on the policies of John McCain and his fellow Republicans, while showing exactly why Barack Obama and the Democrats are a much better choice.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt. The right and this screwed up, ass backward administration will simply write it off as another "Michael Moore" adventure.

Truth hurts...and we'll just keep the sheeple in the dark on this one.

126. NBC "reported" this news as follows:
"A Princeton University professor has won the Nobel Prize for Economics. Paul Krugman won the prize for..." Nary a word about Krugman being a fellow member in good standing of the lib'rul media or anything. :eyes:

"Elitist" equalling "informed" in this case. How many low-information voters know who Paul Krugman is?

131. A STUNNING REPUDIATION OF REPUBLICAN-PARTY SPONSORED CAPITALISM!!
This is a STUNNING repudiation of Republican Party-sponsored capitalism that shifts monies from the vast majority of people whom are poor to the elite rich, while the brunt of their productive efforts go for naught. We need to ensure the transformation of economies from that of the ogliarchy republican power base to that of the people.

The EASIEST way to achieve this feat is, simply, to BAN the republican party. AGAIN, the answer is OBVIOUS!

We can ban republicans by decreeing that the party does NOT stand for political discourse. But that definition, the Mafia can be called a political party (although the republican party DWARFS the shenanigans put out by all the syndicate criminal efforts COMBINED).

In extension, we can declare all contributions to the republican party as violations of the RICO act.

This CAN, and SHOULD BE DONE. Let's start to process this VERY NECESSARY STEP to ensuring TRUE democracy in the United States, in the process help to save this planet from utter destruction, 100% caused by the American Republican Party.

what's up with that?

It's ECONOMICS... seriously, how could the Nobel Prize for Economics make me smile?

How cool is this for all us nerds?
I'm not a science nerd, I"m an English professor, but I understand.

Yippeee Paul, Yipppeee!

159. Way to go Paul!
Americans deserve to choose leaders that are smart people that know what the fuck they are doing!

I'm sick and tired of this whole vaporware government mind fuck we've been living through for the last eight years.

America: Stop voting for the dry drunks you'd like to have a beer with and start electing people that are ultimately qualified for the positions they are running for!

America so needs a Professor of Constitutional Law in the White House right now! Somebody wise enough to appoint opposing viewpoints to hear all sides of the issue.

I hope there's a place for Paul in the Obama administration. The other picks don't have to have all the Nobles, but they better be good enough in their fields to deserve them!

160. Krugman now has the official chit . . .
That qualifies him to call the party of stupid any names he wants, like "The Party of Stupid."

And to start sentences with "It's hard to get Nobel laureates to adopt Republican principles . . ."

And so on.

Take THAT, you spongiform-brained troglodyte twits!

(Of course, now they can accurately denigrate him as an elitist -- which I'm sure will break his heart.)

173. A solo award for Krugman w/o Dixit, Williamson, Bhagwati was probably intended to send a political
message. However, on the whole, Friedmanesque University of Chicago economists have won the Prize more often than people like Krugman.

179. I saw Krugman and Kudlow on the same show
discussing the bailout.

There were in complete agreement with each other. Another person on the panel likened the bailout to giving heroin to a heroin addict. We have problems because credit is too cheap and so our solution is to make credit cheaper.

Krugman's only response is that doing something was better than doing nothing which is questionable at best.

Krugman maybe one of the more liberal talking heads, but he is sure wrong on this bailout.

It sure is better to do nothing than to transfer hundreds of billions of dollars upwards. WE are in serious danger of hyperinflation and it is economists like Krugman that are lighting the match and burning the dollar.

182. so it's not really a nobel prize, per se?
'The award, known as the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, is the last of the six Nobel prizes announced this year and is not one of the original Nobels. It was created in 1968 by the Swedish central bank in Nobel's memory.'

but rather a swedish central bank prize?

good for him, i guess, but it seems like kind of a phony award
