McCain reschedules Letterman appearance after relentless ribbing
Source: Reuters

Republican White House hopeful John McCain will appear as a guest on the CBS ‘Late Show’ with David Letterman this week, after relentless ribbing by the comedian for the candidate’s last-minute cancellation last month amid the financial crisis.

The Arizona senator skipped his appearance on the late night show, telling Letterman he had suspended his presidential campaign so he could immediately return to Washington to participate in the negotiations on a financial bailout package in Congress.

However, McCain ended up staying in New York for another day, drawing repeated blasts by Letterman for standing him up as he tried to fill the empty airtime. To fill some of the show, the comedian discovered footage of McCain getting prepped for an interview with CBS News’ Katie Couric instead of coming on his show.

McCain will appear on Letterman program Thursday Oct. 16, the day after the third and final presidential debate. No word yet on whether McCain will be bringing some sort of peace offering.

7. Does he still do Stupid Pet Tricks?
He should have one of his normal segments run overly-long and interview the other guests for longer than normal and then cut McCain. Either that or have McCain out there for the sole purpose of helping with Stupid Pet Tricks.

21. Olbermann ran a clip from McCain's visit to Dave
(Letterman actually had Keith waiting in the wings).

I noticed that Letterman called McCain "John". Hasn't he, when he's had Obama on called him Senator and Clinton "Mr. President" and Gore "Mr. Vice President"? I don't recall him ever calling one of them by their first name. In fact, doesn't he usually refer to elected officials by their titles?

If I'm right, Dave may have been dissin' McCain in a very subtle way.

13. comedic genius
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 04:39 PM by elbram
I think it would be pure comedic genius if Letterman stood up McCain...by instead having a Barack Obama interview in Katie Couric's studio...

then they could show the feed to Letterman's studio with McCain and Palin getting their make-up put on...

14. I'm waiting for a repeat
I'm just waiting for McCain to do it again. Can you imagine what Letterman will do if McCain cancels a second time - for whatever reason? :-)

15. So, did McCain cave to pressure or what?
Just the kind of resolute resolve we want to see from old Noodle Spine McCain, isn't it?

17. Too late, McSame.
It's not going to do you or your campaign any good to suddenly try to suck up to Letterman. The game is over. Take your ball and go home.

18. If I was Dave, I would walk off the stage, just as McCain walks on.
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 09:59 PM by IanDB1
Perhaps I'd have McCain walk out there to find Keith Olbermann behind my desk.

19. Once again too little, too late
McCain should have fixed it right after it happened. It's been 3 weeks or so now and the damage is done. Is this really what Americans want a President that always reacts to slowly and inefective in times of crisis?

Americans should have enough evidence to realize that McCain is just more of the same of the last 8 years.
