Cindy McCain goes on the attack
Source: CNN

Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, appears to have sharpened her attacks against Barack Obama on the campaign trail in the final stretch of the race for the White House.

One day after she told a Tennessee newspaper Obama is running the "dirtiest campaign in American history," Mrs. McCain criticized the Illinois senator for voting against a bill to fund troops in Iraq, a regular line of attack from her husband’s campaign.

“The day that Senator Obama cast a vote not to fund my son when he was serving sent a cold chill through my body, let me tell you,” she told a Pennsylvania crowd before introducing her husband and Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin. ---

56. wow, another women to do the attacking while mccain
hides behind them while holding on to their apron strings. He's not man enough to stand up and say these things to Obama's face where he can be held accountable for his lies, instead he sends out cindy and palin to do the attacks while he sucks his thumb and goes through his second childhood in secret.

And I am not making an issue of his age. I suspect I may be entering my second childhood and I just hope it will be more fun than my first one. ;)

19. Why must you bring that up?
Millions of americans suffer from addictions of all sorts and it is more then just some moral failing, enviromental and genetics play a role. Also many people are prescribed narcotic prescribtion drugs that patients unintentionally become addicted. Addiction is a very serious matter that could happen to anyone.

There is SO MUCH more to go after her.

27. If she's an addict, that's her responsibility.
It's JUST like an addict to distract away from her own bad behavior and because she has bad boundaries and she is about of control, not to mention sneaky, attack another human being in this despicable manner.

So, you know what, it probably IS the drugs.

Now, what did you want to tell me about addicts?

36. So what does that have to do with now?
She went to rehab in '93 and since then there hasn't been any evidence that she is currently using. It just seems stupid to slam her like this when you can just call her a liar. Obama himself admitted that he was addicted to cocaine and alcohol, it happens to alot of people and it is very powerful. Many can lose everything, want to quit but can't do it. Many quit but relapse, it is more powerful then you think.

50. Because of Cindy McCain's wealth
she din't get as much as a hand slap for stealing heavy duty drugs from her company and writing prescriptions in other people's names.

If the same thing had happened to anyone that was poor/low income, they would have been serving YEARS in prison.

In this country we have two sets of laws. One is for the poor, the other for the rich.

Fair is fair. If she can tell lies about Obama, then we can tell the truth about her.

55. Not true - well maybe depending on state laws
First time offenders are generally let off easy then repeat offenders. I'm sure you probaly got examples to counter mine but here goes mine. I known a young women with a prior drug offenses in Aberdeen, WA that stole a check from someone and used it to buy a piece of heroin. She was ordered to return the money, pay a fine, graduate from treatment, attend NA meetings for the remainder of her probation. There was others there for court ordered treatment and many had multiple convictions.

85. My post was as relevant to the discussion
as your post was to reality.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, as of June 30, 2007, American prisons and jails held 2,299,116 inmates.<9> In recent decades the U.S. has experienced a surge in its prison population, quadrupling since 1980, partially as a result of mandated sentences that came about during the "war on drugs." Violent crime and property crime have declined since the early 1990s.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisons_in_the_United_States

My point being, the rich can buy their way out of a prison sentence (as did Cindy), but the poor are "criminals" for doing, in many cases, far less that she did.

89. Mandated sentences are mostly for drug dealers
Which I oppose. There is definately something wrong with the way the war on drugs is being handled. 1st time offenders usually have light sentences, I'm sure the judge looked at the fact that for 40 years she hasn't committed a crime so if you take that into account. I know some people get unfair punishments while others don't but many 1st time offenders get light sentences and for drugs is usually court appointed treatment.

65. He called himself a junkie
Long before the national media spotlight began to shine on every twist and turn of his life's journey, Barack Obama had this to say about himself: "Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man. . . . I got high push questions of who I was out of my mind."

74. This is getting WAY too technical
"I got high push questions of who I was out of my mind." Using as an escape can be considered an addiction rather then just experimenting.

By him saying "that is where I was headed" means an addiction. Addiction is like a disease, it progresses. He was young so it isn't that bad at that point which means it's easier to break but using to escape reality is addiction. People who are addicted are addicts whether they use or not. Alcoholism is generally a generally a genetic trait. For example you go to an AA meeting, someone with 35+ years of sober time still says everyday "I'm (name) and I'm an alcoholic" He is still and always be an alcoholic whether he picks up another drink. The difference between someone who is an addict and someone who isn't is that someone who will try something and have no desire to use again. The other is someone who experiments and gets 'hooked' it doesn't matter how long they use. Cindy will always be an addict whether she uses or not. This is very complicated to explain.

77. No, that is what you are claiming, not what Obama wrote.
And it's not technical at all. Addiction is a self identifying illness.

So, don't bother to explain to me what you mean. Explain it to yourself and see if it makes sense.

81. It makes perfect sense
A self identifying illness? Many people who are addicted are in denial that they are addicted.

Let me make it simple. Obama realized that if he continued to use life would turn out bad so he cut it off - that is addiction progressing. Someone who isn't addict tries it out a few times and has no desire to use it again. (I tried it, I didn't like it) Someone who enjoys the affects or uses it to escape reality is addicted no matter what the stage is.

I'm not making this shit up, I've done massive research in chemical dependency.

Bottom line is, even if someone is addicted. They can always recover and go on to live productive lives.

besides, it seems to me, best as I can see it, the technicality in this line of thinking is not being brought about by anything more than the thesis you seem to be presenting.

Cindy is a pill popper. She is lucky to not be in jail for it.

87. I don't know for a fact if he is or not
I'm saying it is possible that he was. This shows that even at a young age Obama is very intelligent, he realized if he continued to habits his life would get worse. Many people don't realize that, they say "I can stop when I want to" or "I won't end up like them" before it is too late.

People who aren't addicted can have a drink after work for the rest of their life, not as a way to escape reality but as a way to unwind. Same thing with other substances. What Obama saw was a possible reality of life turning bad if he continued and it is good thing he realized while he was young. Obama's father had alcohol problems and it is likely those genes passed on to him.

However in Cindy's case. It is not unusual for first time offenders to get light punishment (I've seen this ALOT) especially considering she hasn't been convicted of a crime for the 40 years she has been alive at the time. Many people charged with their first DUI gets a deferred prosecution if he/she regurlary attends AA meetings. Though I do feel like Cindy should have atleast a misdemeanor on her record like most people in similar situations. However at the same time there are people who get the book thrown at them for smaller crimes. She is lucky but it's not unusual.

95. When I made the comment I didn't have the link immediately available
But I remembered reading about it and he described it as a dark time in his life which sounds like addiction. Big deal.

Here is what my deal is. There are many people out there that don't touch crack, coke, whatever there whole life until they get hurt and is prescribed opiod painkillers and their brain becomes hijacked. I don't blame Cindy for that happening to her because it happens to alot of honest people. For me anyways vic's and perc's don't do shit except make me sleep. But if a doctor suggests you should take this pill and you become hooked it isn't your fault. Besides she isn't the enemy, she doesn't pass any legislation all she is, is a business woman that supports her husband.

Obama also stated in that article: "Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though."

With all due respect, "when you could afford it" doesn't exactly sound like a full-blown addiction.

45. That is a fair point - about the party locking up poor addicts
But many first time offenders are sent to treatment rather then jail. It is very common, just because she is well known figure doesn't mean she should have the book thrown at her. She was required to pay financial restitution, enroll in a diversion program, and community service which is normal for a first time offender.

72. Yep, that's what makes this such a sleazy line of attack
Edited on Wed Oct-08-08 05:05 PM by KevinJ
I mean, I understand that negative campaigning is often an effective tactic and, while I wish we were above such self-degradation in this country, I'm realistic enough to know that we're going to continue to engage in attack ads and I can live with that. But there needs to be at least a kernel of truth to it, so like, attacking Obama for having less experience than some I would consider fair game. But spewing out charges that you know to be completely misleading and false goes beyond spinning the truth to suit your purposes; that's just flat out lying. There is no way that Cindy McCain could not appreciate that Obama and her husband both voted yea and nay to competing versions of the same bill to "fund her son while he was in Iraq," anymore than McCain could not possibly know the same. So to keep trotting this out over and over as if they really believed it, that's just beneath contempt. No one who lies that unashamedly deserves to hold any public office, much less the highest in the land.

20. John McCain, voted against troop funding - see here
None pointed out that on March 29, 2007, McCain himself voted against H.R. 1591, an emergency spending bill that would have funded the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and would have provided more than $1 billion in additional funds to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Senate passed H.R. 1591 by a margin of 51-47. Once the bill's conference report was agreed to by the House, the Senate again passed the measure on April 26, 2007, by a vote of 51-46. McCain did not vote on that version of the bill. By contrast, Obama voted for it on both occasions. President Bush vetoed the bill, citing its provision for a timetable for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Moreover, McCain has voted against other legislation funding care for veterans. On April 26, 2006, McCain voted against an amendment by Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-HI) that would have "provide an additional $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans." In addition, on March 14, 2006, McCain voted against "increas Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes." On March 10, 2004, McCain also voted against "creat a reserve fund to allow for an increase in Veterans' medical care by $1.8 billion by eliminating tax loopholes." Obama voted for the first two measures; he had not yet entered the Senate when the third vote was cast. http://mediamatters.org/items/200806040002

I wonder if her husband's failure to vote for troop funding sent a chill up her spine. They really insult the intelligence of voters with these gutter attacks, but evidently that's all they have left.

What about her husband's vote against "funding for the troops?" Thi sis a lie compounded by a lie: it's not as if any of these votes have ever left any US soldier without ammunition, or ever could do so.

40. Ge, thanks, MS BUD. Now tell us about convicted felons and beer money
Even though the McShame's own at least 13 vehicles, Cindy most often drives her "company car" paid for by her beer distributorship. My favorite quote is below.

Mrs. McCain, who’s been known to zip around Phoenix in a car with “MS BUD” vanity plates

Cindy, like Sister Sarah, likes to complain about other peoples' pasts. John McShame has told the world what a roll model Cindy's father was. Problem with that is, of course, the Hensley millions were built with dirty money, and Cindy's role-model daddy was convicted of multiple felony charges related to shady business practices.

The McShamefuls and the Pain-in-the's have a little personal housecleaning to do before criticizing others.

The chill was McCain's first wife who found out Cindy was sleeping with her husband. Cindy is so, silly, she stands and says nothing and when she decides to speak she thinks someone will listen. She probably does not realize her husband voted the same as Barack.

that after the debate when Michelle Obama was meeting and talking with members of the debate audience, Cindy McCain was standing behind her husband with her hands behind her back as if she was trying to avoid contact with the common folk? It is not hard to observe the McCains and come away with the impression that THEY ARE THE ELITESTS in the room.

101. If she had an ounce of integrity,
She would have told the speechwriter "No way in h*ll I'm saying these things." She did not, so that speaks volumes about what kind of person she is. "Potential" first ladies, I don't care if they're Dems or Repubs, simply should not lower themselves to being attack dogs. It is unseemly and downright ugly. That speech was shameful and I hope Mrs McCain has the decency to stay silent going forward.

Michelle Obama, on the other hand, was elegant, articulate, and just plain positive on Larry King and The Daily Show yesterday. She is a joy to listen to and does the Dem party proud when she speaks.
