ReutersBAGHDAD, Oct 8 (Reuters) - A female suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest killed 10 people and wounded 21 on Wednesday in Baquba, capital of Iraq's volatile Diyala province north of Baghdad, police said.
A police official said the bomber struck a joint police and army checkpoint guarding the provincial government compound and a courthouse. He said the explosion occurred as the mayor of the Diyala town of Khalis was entering the building. The mayor, Uday al-Khadran, was not hurt, the official said.
Another source said prisoners from al Qaeda Sunni militant group were being tried inside the courthouse at the time of the bombing. The police sources said five Iraqi soldiers, a policeman and four civilians were killed in the attack.
Ibrahim al-Bajilan, head of the Diyala provincial council, said among the casualties was a male would-be suicide bomber who was wounded in the explosion and is now in the custody of security forces.
