Car explodes outside Russian military HQ in South Ossetia; 7 Russians killed

TBILISI, Georgia — A car has exploded outside the Russian military headquarters in South Ossetia, killing seven people and wounding several others.

The chief of the Russian military in the breakaway Georgian region said the dead were all members of the Russian peacekeeping force based there. Russia's Foreign Ministry condemned the attack as a crime and said it was aimed at undermining efforts to ensure peace and security in South Ossetia and Georgia.

There was no immediate indication, however, that Russia would abandon its commitment to withdraw peacekeepers from a swath of land surrounding South Ossetia next week.

The ITAR-Tass news agency quoted South Ossetia's separatist president, Eduard Kokoity, as calling the blast "a targeted terrorist act" by the Georgian security service.

Georgia's Security Council chief, Alexander Lomaia, denied Georgian involvement and told The Associated Press that Russian "occupation forces" and South Ossetian separatists bear full responsibility for what happens in areas they control.

4. Russian troops die in Ossetia car bomb
Source: AFP

MOSCOW (AFP) — Seven Russian soldiers were killed in an apparent car bomb attack in the Georgian separatist region of South Ossetia condemned by Moscow as an attempt to undermine the EU-Russia peace accord.

"The ministry of defence sees the accident as a terrorist attack aimed at undermining the application" of the peace agreement, said a Russian defence ministry statement.

The agreement was reached on September 8 when French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country holds the European Union presidency, and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed a timetable for Russian forces to pull out of undisputed Georgian territory following the two countries' conflict over South Ossetia.

Under the plan, Russia is also due to draw back its troops from "buffer zones" around the rebel regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia into the regions themselves by October 10.

Seven servicemen were killed and seven others wounded in the blast in the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali where Russian troops are based, Major-General Marat Kulakhmetov told Interfax news agency in the city.

why would the Georgians give the Russians reason to invade?

Tension mounts after South Ossetia blast

The commander of the Russian peacekeeping force in South Ossetia, General Marat Kulahmetov, said a bomb went off in a Georgian vehicle detained during a routine patrol of the Georgian settlements

During further inspection of the vehicles and the detainees a bomb, equivalent to about 20 kilograms of TNT, went off," said General Kulahmetov.

The South Ossetian leadership is blaming the explosion on Georgia.South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity said the attack was the work of Georgian special services, adding that Georgia is pursuing "a policy of state terrorism”.

"The latest terrorist acts in South Ossetia prove that Georgia has not abandoned its policy of state terrorism. We have no doubt that those terrorist acts have been carried out by Georgian special services.

Nobody seems to want to mention that possibility, yet it seems the most likely.
